5) Tim Hecker & Daniel Lopatin - "Instrumental Tourist"

No matter what they do, Hecker & Lopatin always create something amazing. A combination of the abstract electronica from Lopatin & the classic drones from Hecker, creates a slightly jazz-influenced album, which, does have its downfalls, but is one of the best albums of 2012. hands down.

(20)12 IN 12 ALBUMS - #1: Cat Power - Sun

Pegando aleatoriamente em três discos de Cat Power dificilmente se compreenderia que se tratava da mesma artista não fosse pela voz rouca e mesmerizante de Chan Marshall. Do rock lofi l à electrónica, passando pelos blues, soul e outros tantos experimentalismos na música alternativa, o legado que Marshall construiu desde 1995 é tão notório quanto camaleónico. No entanto nunca recorreu a alter-egos e a mulher que se apresentou ao mundo em Dear Sir é exactamente a mesma que vemos agora, mais evoluída e segura que não se consegue representar de uma única forma. Duas décadas atrás, minada por problemas pessoais tornados mais ou menos públicos nos passados anos, Chan Marshall teria feito um álbum muito diferente. Mas, tal como o título faz adivinhar, Sun é um disco iluminado. As sombras, sempre presentes e tangíveis, nunca são temerosas o suficientes para poderem dominar a luz que brota de cada refrão. Porque apesar de poder ser catalogado por folk electrónica ou experimental, Sun é inequivocamente um álbum pop. E se isso pode ser chocante para muitos, a realidade é que este delirante escape assenta-lhe que nem uma luva e, talvez contraditoriamente, Chan Marshall nunca foi tão honesta. Simplesmente decidiu que no meio de tantos tormentos é possível encontrar felicidade e que a esperança mora imediatamente por debaixo das trevas. É por isso que Nothing But Time, entre outras, não são simplesmente canções. São hinos humanos, intemporais e quase tribais, com uma chama e fulgor incapazes de ser extinguidos.

8. T-ARA - Sexy Love September 4, Mirage  Since this is the song I sing to the dogs almost every single week, it had to rate pretty damn high. Easy to pick up chorus, easy to pick up dance moves, catchy riff, T-ara, or whoever writes for them, knows how to make addicted songs, as I've probably said before. It's a shame everything's kinda fallen apart there because had they produced the same songs at a company that wasn't quite as dodgy, they could be so popular right now. 

7. SUNG JOON - Jaywalking February 13, Shut Up Flower Boy Band OST Part 2  Sighhhhhh SUFBB you were so awesome. I love this song, a lot. I love how it sounds raw and unpolished, as if their misfit boy band really did come up with it themselves. Sung Joon's voice fits the style perfectly, since it's a real rock voice (rather than them getting some idol singer with a pop style voice). 내 내 내 가슴이 턱 gets me every time.

6. ORANGE CARAMEL - Lipstick September 12, Lipstick  This has got to be my favourite Orange Caramel song yet. I've always like Orange Caramel, due to my tendency to love trashy cutesy girl group songs that make me totally question my weird taste in music. I like how the writers took a familiar melody, which makes it even easier for it to get stuck in your head. Plus the omo omo dance part is like.. my favourite dance move of the year (except maybe Sexy Love?).

5. AFTER SCHOOL - Flashback June 20, Flashback  Of course After School's comeback would be up this high. I think there were a lot of people who didn't really like it, and a lot of people who just complained constantly about how Kahi wasn't there (yeah sure, I'm disappointed she left too, but it's After School, they have a graduation concept so what were you expecting?), but I really loved it (and I do in fact know all the words).

4. MIRYO (BROWN EYED GIRLS) FT. SUNNY (GIRLS' GENERATION) - I Love You, I Love You February 1, Miryo aka Johoney Yay officially my favourite Korean soshi song of the year, I'm just so glad that Sunny got the chance to do this. Her voice often gets dismissed as too cute or whatever, but here she showed that when she doesn't have to sing in that way, it's really beautiful (which most Sones already knew anyway). Plus as usual, Miryo is an incredible rapper (with a lot of emotion in her voice when she raps, which I like). 

3. T-ARA - Day by Day July 3, Day by Day  Sigh Day by Day was the T-ara era when I finally decided to choose a bias. Of course I chose Hwayoung and then it all went to shit so thank you Core Contents or whatever the company was called. This was the only epically long T-ara MV I actually enjoyed (even though I wish they could have included everyone, even if it was only in a small role). Anyway Hwayoung's rap is flipping awesome and I miss her. Oh also I feel I like this song cos it would kinda fit in a fantasy epic despite its modern instrumentation. 

2. SUNNY HILL - The Grasshopper Song January 13, The Grasshoppers  You know how I love a song with a good message. And there are so many Sunny Hill songs to choose from like that, but this is definitely my favourite one. For one thing the epicness of the MV, which is so much more creative and interesting and fitting for the subject than many Kpop MVs. For another thing, Janghyun!! even if his part is totally autotuned. I miss him. Plus again it's such a catchy song omg.

1. GLAM - Party(XXO) July 16, Party(XXO)  ANNA IS BIASEEEEEEEEEEEED YAYYYYYY! But seriously I don't know how anybody could not like this song, I could listen to it all day, all week, all month, forever. It's happy and fun, it's catchy, it's meaningful, the MV is interesting (although totally cheesy at times, floating in the night sky anyone?), all the girls are incredibly talented (watch they're live it's flawless and the dance is pretty active). Seriously why does this song not have more views? It's so perfect...

(20)12 IN 12 ALBUMS - #3: Lana Del Rey - Born To Die Numa época em que a indústria discográfica se batalha em relação ao seu próprio futuro, são cada vez mais raras as inesperadas revelações e casos instantâneos de sucesso. No entanto foi num ápice que Lana Del Rey se tornou num dos maiores sucessos de 2012. Ainda mais estranho quando a sua música surge muito à margem da pop actual, imersa numa melancolia nostálgica e depressiva que se deu a conhecer ao mundo com a intangível Video Games. A partir daí rapidamente ganhou fãs, dentro e fora do panorama alternativo, e, inevitavelmente, detractores. Mas a julgar pela evolução demonstrada em Paradise, EP lançado coma reedição de Born To Die, este é só o começo. A desconstrução do sonho americano continuará na voz enfeitiçada de Lana Del Rey porque ela acredita nele; e a cada vez que se deixa trair um pouco dele (e dela) é destruído para sempre.

16. AMBER, LUNA & KRYSTAL (F(X)) - Beautiful Stranger June 10, Electric Shock Okay so maybe I particularly like this because it was put in an SNSD FMV by yuldori, but you know it's a really good song (aside from when Amber raps in English which I always find awkward, sorry Amber). I like how the sound of the song matches the lyrics, or at least to me.

15. BTOB - Wow September 12, Press Play Yayyyyy the 90s revival in Kpop this year has given me so much life I love it. I didn't notice BtoB AT ALL before this song and now they're my favourite male rookies so you know it did something right. Everything is good about this song (even the bad bits) and MV. It's catchy, it's fun and silly and awesome and I dunno... Look Gavin it made the top 15! You should be excited that's a pretty high position.

14. FIESTAR - Vista August 31, Vistar  Fiestar were another awesome female debut this year. I get annoyed because people tend to not notice the girl group debuts as much but they deserve so much love. There's some killer vocal talent in this group (I haven't really learnt their names but the girl with the short hair?). I love the rap part, which is unusual since usually I find the raps often let the song down.  

13. NS YOON-G FT. JAY PARK - If You Love Me November 1, If You Love Me  If you love me, if you love me. I've loved NS Yoon-G for a while now, but I feel like she hasn't had a really good song until now. She's so hot seriously. I'm not even sure why I like this song so much so I don't really have anything to say here, but I seem to end up listening to it all the time. 

12. EPIK HIGH - Kill This Love October 19, 99 Let me count the ways I love this song. Maybe it's just me.. because this is the sort of music I like outside of Kpop, but I really like it. I like that the song is interesting, it doesn't always do what you expect it to. And aside from Get Out of the Way, it has the best rap passages on 99. 

11. SUNNY HILL - The White Horse is Coming April 20, The White Horse is Coming Sunny Hill my love you haven't failed to produced awesome dance tracks (and others too) with meaningful lyrics and interesting MVs and for that I love you so much. I dunno if I would like this song so much if it didn't come with those lyrics and MV tbh, although again I do like when a song does something a bit different.

10. GIRLS' GENERATION-TTS - Baby Steps April 29, Twinkle My favourite song of the Twinkle album, this is another ballad that I listen to every night (there are quite a few in my sleepy playlist). Even though it's your typical SNSD I like you but I'm too shy to say so (kinda) song their vocals really make it stand out to me. And I love the chorus 1, 2 etc.  

9. HYUNA (4MINUTE) FT. ILHOON (BTOB) - Green Apple October 21, Melting  Wooooooow this song is so good omfg. I don't even know why I love it so much again but it's the perfect song to walk in the sunshine or just hang about to. I wish Hyuna had performed this more (with Ilhoon) because I did like it a lot better than Ice Cream (which was okay, but no Bubble Pop tbh).
