Korean Topic Markers 은 and는
Ok so in Korean you need to use topic markers like 은 and는 which introduce a new topic to the sentence.
은 is used after a word that ends in a consonant잭선은 음식을 먹어요 (Jackson eats food)
는 is used after a word that ends with a vowel영재는 음식을 먹어요 (Youngjae eats food)
은 and는can be used to talk about things you have already mentioned
For example: “갓세븐의 잭선이 야생이에요. 그는 또한 섹시해요” (Got7’s Jackson is wild. He is also sexy) lol
Since I had already mentioned him in the first sentence using 이 (a subject marker) you already know who I’m talking about so in the second sentence I’m free to use 는
Last but not least they can be used to show contrast. for example: some K-Pop fans are talking and Fangirl A says “나는 임재범의 팬이에요” (I’m Im Jaebum’s fan)
Then Fangirl B who is also a fan of him says “나도 임재범의 팬이에요” (I’m also Im Jaebum’s fan)
But the Fangirl C comes along and changes everything cuz she’s Yugyeom biased so she says “나는 깅유겸의 팬이에요” (I’m Kim Yugyeom’s fan)
In this situation when fangirl C added 는 instead of 도 she was indicating that there was gonna be a change, that there was a contrast between their preferences and hers
Note* this was my first official lesson hope you enjoyed, if you notice any mistakes please tell me so I can fix it. Hopefully I’ll get around to doing more. If you have any suggestions for lessons let me know and I’ll try to make it happen. (p.s gifs are not mine)
Topic Markers
Heard a professor say to another student, "This is me, but I really need a topic marker. ...Can you tell me what it is you want to impart to the rest of the class." Which is the nicest, most teacherly way of saying "Why are you telling us this involved, boring story with seemingly no point--how does it relate it what we're actually talking about?"
