Research by the Energy Saving Trust has shown that laundering accounts for 60% to 80% of a garment's total environmental impact, so you can significantly reduce your impact even by washing your clothes after every few wears. Furthermore The United Nations Environment Programme crunched the numbers and discovered that you can consume up to five times less energy by wearing your jeans at least three times, washing them in cold water, and skipping the dryer or the iron. Even #levis agree and recommend washing your jeans every two weeks rather than after each wear. Once you've washed your clothes hang them out to dry, not only does line drying reduce energy consumption it also protects your clothes. The agitation of the tumble dryer causes microscopic wear that you can't see unless you look in the dryer's lint compartment. There you will find pieces of fabric that have come off the clothing in the dryer, and they reduce the longevity of your garment. Finally to iron or not to iron - again unless it's essential that you don't look creased then just say no. Not only is ironing the world's worst chore it uses a fuck ton of energy and detiorates fabrics. So know that when you're ignoring that ironing pile you're helping to save the planet - told you this was an easy eco tip! To help you not look crumpled, hang clothes as soon as they have finished in the washer - the water in the clothing will work with gravity to pull most wrinkles out.
