train ride
6/26/2004--The light rail opened in the Twin Cities area.
My sister Sara has not been downtown except to pick me up for trips in quite a long time, so the directions were difficult for her. It was 2/3rds of the way through this morning's YGO episode before she called to let me know she and my brother Shaun were on their way to the rendezvous point. That point was in front of Jimmy John's Sandwiches, which is the only business on the 6th Street side of Block E. (It's really an odd placement, but that means there's very little traffic on that side, and most of the annoying teenagers prefer to hang out on the Hennepin Ave side.) By the time we got there, the line to ride the LRT was already halfway around the block. This made us too far away to be able to hear any of the opening ceremonies, sadly. That said, the line moved pretty quickly once the trains started rolling. The cars can hold quite a few people, and we were able to take a ride within half an hour. Due to time constraints, we only went from the Warehouse District stop to the Metrodome Stop, a distance of nine or ten blocks. But it was sufficient to tell that the cars were comfortable and the system worked smoothly. (Today, at least.) Every stop had some activities; most of the ones at the Metrodome revolved around our hometown pro baseball team, the Twins. I won a Torii Hunter mini-bobblehead at a wheel of fortune. Lots of items at the silent auction, but I didn't have a minimum of $150 to spare for autographed baseballs and such. There was a nice choir at the Government Center, and the Nicollet Ave stop was giving out tote bags. Back at the Warehouse District, the big line (other than for the train itself) was for the Timberwolves cheerleaders, but I wasn't going to stand in line for the chance to spend money just to get a pretty woman's autograph (photos extra, no phone numbers.) We had some pad thai from one of the vendors, my sister discovering that she really doesn't like Thai tea. (When I ordered it, she thought it was chai tea, which she does like.) Then we drove off, got some ice cream at Dairy Queen, and went to Shaun's place to do some visiting. We were joined by Shaun's wife and their two kids, a little too young to do as much walking as we'd been doing, and later Sara's eldest joined us as well, finally off-duty for a few weeks. It turns out that my brother is indeed having a 4th of July party this year, and I am invited (despite my invitation never having turned up) so I'll miss Convergence again this year. Which is kind of a pity. I understand it's the big fun convention Minicon used to be, and many of the people I used to see at the other con now go there instead. Afterwards, I dropped by Dreamhaven and picked up Newtype USA and Animedia. All in all, a better birthday than most.
After the 2017 season ended, Kemp fixed his diet, refreshed his perspective and reshaped his physique. Now he has re-established his status among his peers.
