JT: was, so far, doing a reasonable job in hiding that he failed to get into college. His grandmother had long since assumed that he was living in the accommodation at Smithdale University, and that his audition for the prestigious performing arts program had been successful. However, that was not the case, and an unfortunate slip-up on audition day gave the judging panel reason to believe that he wasn’t quite ready to join their ranks. Still, they planted a seed of hope into JT’s mind, suggesting that perhaps with more acting experience, he could be admitted the following year. With months to go until his re-audition, JT pursued jobs both in acting and retail, the money from which he used to rent an apartment. Eventually, despite his best efforts to cut spending and work long hours, the money he’d saved was quickly running out, and the boy was facing eviction. While he was sure his grandmother would welcome him back with open arms, he desperately didn’t want to tell her about his shortcomings; how he’d disappointed her yet again with his poor audition performance, and outright refusal to study anywhere else. Instead, he took a rather bold move in accepting an offer by a kind stranger. Tori Santamaria was a waitress at the Dot, and they happened to meet by chance. Upon talking to her and getting to know her more, it was realised that the two had plenty in common, including their interest in the arts and their plans for college in the new year. She seemed like a genuinely nice person, and JT didn’t see much harm in staying in her spare room, at least until he found somewhere else to go. He parked his clapped-out car outside the apartment complex and tentatively entered the main building, hoping to find Tori’s place quickly. Within a few minutes, he was fairly sure he’d found it, and he knocked on the door firmly before stepping back. “Tori?” he called, hoping that his voice would carry through the door.
