The pair found solace in the tranquil rural parts scattered throughout the city. Most houses were lined with ornate stone lanterns. Even with the very few people walking the streets, the lives of Kyoto’s residents were living paintings Zenkichi let Takuto draw into his notebook.
“We need more glitter,” Zenkichi joked, chuckling as Takuto slammed his notebook shut. “Too much light hits around these parts.”
“No, we do not.” Takuto playfully scowled at the other man, pointing the end of his pencil at him. “I’m painting these with watercolor once we get home. I do not want glitter to ruin these simple paintings, Zen.”
“I know, Maru. I find it interesting that you managed to get the natural harmony the neighborhood has… Unlike some tourists.” Zenkichi rolled his eyes, “I also think some of the locals like you. I guess your curiosity is endearing to them.”
“...When you say it like that, it makes me think the old couple we bumped into earlier were making happy tears.” Takuto made a small smile. “I still find it amazing they got to experience a lot in their lives… so I guess you’re right.”
