Torneko: The Last Hope (Chunsoft/Matrix - PSX - 1999)
Shiren the Wanderer!!
I wanted to give a try to other games in the Mystery Dungeon series, so I started playing a Shiren the Wanderer one for the very first time yesterday (Serpentcoil Island)...
...Why did nobody tell me about these before... The characters are so cute and most sound effects, menus, items and portraits are EXACTLY like the Pokémon ones???
Here's a clip from the very beginning of the game so you can hear and see the sound and visual effects 🥺
And just look at these two and try to tell me they're not the same picture. It looks so funny hghg
I know it's all made by Chunsoft, but finding the same sounds and other similarities was a huge surprise seriously omg I'm so happy,,
Koppa is absolutely a PMD partner too, I love his personality :') And Shiren (the protagonist) even gets amnesia too, woohoo!
Even though the difficulty seems a bit higher due to the whole "if you lose you have to restart at level 1 and lose every item" deal, I'm having so much fun... And there's some other differences between this game and PMD that are very cool too!!
I didn't even know about the Shiren games until recently, so if you're into PMD please give these a try too!
I also played a little bit of Torneko in the past, and a bit of Chocobo as well (although that one isn't made by Chunsoft, but if you've played it you'll know it's basically the same genre). I'd love to go back to those once I'm done with Shiren!
Torneko
recently watched a video documentary about this guy and his legacy and i have to say, its quite impressive that this is the guy you have to thank for pokemon mystery dungeon, izuna unemployed ninja, and most rouge-likes that took elements from the mystery dungeon series as torneko was the protagonist of the very first one before it was taken to other franchises and settings. here in the west he's nowhere as big of a icon but i just think its the lack of familiarity over here
Played through moon and Dragon Quest IV this month.
