Torontal WIP - trial sketches #2
Second trial sketches of Torontál, this time around with a more stockier and wider build, and some brainstorming!
Tongue curling up during firebreath: quite a sudden and wild idea, not gonna lie. It's probably way too over the top and dumb, but it was worth sketching out, I think :dummy:
Neck frill: based on lizards, cuz why not. While I don't think Kíonadracos revere fire the way we humans had done so (then again, many ancient or primitive human cultures give special significance to spit...), the ability to actually breathe fire is important to them. So wouldn't it be extra nice if the males also had their adornment around that very significant organ?
Wingshape: I put slightly more thought into it, although still not entirely sure about the way to go yet. Thanks to @DragonMarquise for sharing a very helpful post about realistic dragon wings, nonetheless! I might be able to think up something a bit more extra that also doesn't entirely mess up clothing for these dragons. Oh yeah, unlike the other three dragon species, Kíonadracos are big on clothing - mostly because they live up north (in the current worldbuilding, that is).
Why is he holding a bell, specifically? Well, mostly just for fun, but also... I want Torontál to be a versatile warrior with a collection of hopefully strange weapons (that may or may not be practical in the real world), and one of them is a weird idea that has to do something with a large bell. We will see how things will progress.
Bonus ancient writing! I want the writing of the long gone dragon empire to feature in the world of Great Avalon, even though nobody can read it now. While I don't have an actual alphabet and writing method figured out yet, I do have ideas for the overall visual style of the writing, and where it might have come from (and maybe even the very architecture of the empire).
Overall, very few things are set in stone for his design. Although I must say, I think I like this stockier build better. I can't tell what direction I would take a third trial sketchdump, but I think I will come up with something.

Torontál WIP - Trial Sketches #1
(I need to start working on the logo really hard now... I have got the base idea actually, thankfully)
There are three established things I already know about Kionadracos and Torontál. 1) They are fully bipedal. 2) They are the only dragons that can actually breathe fire naturally, (I think I already have the method figured out in a layman way), and 3) They have natural fur in the form of manes/hair.
#1 and #3 came from the Hungarian dragons I based them on, while #2 simply came from "Eeh, they were the dominating species on the planet a long long time ago, and none of the other dragon species can breathe fire so far. Let's change that".
The rest is currently under development. I am not yet sure which bipedal animal (prehistoric or not) should be the base for the body shape, so I will more than likely go through a couple of trial sketchdumps like this one, to see them in action. Of course I would love to hear your thoughts on them as well! ^^

Torontál WIP - Head silhouettes
After a long break, I am finally tackling the fourth and (currently) final member of the dragon team, called Torontál. His species is currently called Kionadraco ("pillar dragon") and they had been the original rulers of the world before it got merged into Great Avalon. They are also the only dragon species that can naturally breathe fire, as their bodies create a special kind of oil in a separate gland within their throats. Now smaller than their ancestors and shunned by basically all of the world, the Kionadraco live mostly nomadic lives up north and have little contact with any other nation.
Torontál has a bbbit different situation, however.
Let's start down the road, shall we! :D I have his general body shape down, however the head is definitely the lead when it comes to the details on the rest of the body, hence a separate sheet for head silhouettes. I will try to keep all of the WIP pictures linked together. I would like to see you all down the road, and as always I am open for ideas or suggestions ^^
