Sierra Nevada Torpedo, 7.4% abv

Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale is an undisputed craft beer classic, as old as the scene it has helped so many discover and one of the most refreshing and drinkable tipples out there. It also has a big brother. A take no prisoners badass of a big brother named after a naval weapon! Well sort of, the name of this Extra IPA actually comes from the shape of the special dry hopping device the Sierra Nevada boffins came up with to better infuse the flavours of the citra hops. I like it when beers are named after weapons. Even if they're not really.

It looks nice on pour, all orangey amber with a fluffy head that remains glued to the glass. The aroma has pine, citrus, and damp earth, though it's not as strong as other IPA's.

There's loads of grapefruit in the taste, the pine's there too, some cedar as well, it adds a nice spiciness. The caramel malt introduces itself towards the end, and the balance of the whole thing is rather impressive. The finish has a lingering bitterness and is very dry, makes me want more. 

Yeah I really like this, but there's a stupid amount of great craft brewed IPA's out there right now, so why go for this one from the Californian old timers? Because it's relatively easy to get hold of for sure, but it's also a great beer, big on the citrus and pine flavours we expect with a nice spicy earthiness to it. I'll continue to buy these whenever I see them.
