🍻 PEARSON EXPRESS By @hendersonbrewing ————— IPA 6.5% abv ————— Henderson’s is undoubtedly one of my favourite breweries in Toronto. Their Nordic lager is one of my go-to beers, I can’t get enough of UPA, and I always enjoy their rotating “IDE’s of” monthly series. Henderson’s even hosted Bottle Trade Club a while back, and they put on one hell of a cask beer for the event. UPA (now Pearson express) has a special place for me as it’s the last beer I drink before flying out at YYZ. I have ample memories sitting down for a quick meal and a pre-flight UPA at @caplanskys. That’s my airport tradition. Pearson Express pours a rich orange with a bubbly white foam. An ultra fresh pineapple aroma jumps right out of the glass on this beer. I also get bits of tangerine and papaya. A sip echos much of the aromas, layered over a lightly bready malt base. A hefty helping of grapefruit and a firm bitterness help to round this beer out. I’m still on my @royalcitybrew kick with Rustic Saison. This comes as a 6 pack of tiny cans (sadly no tall boys or bottles) for around $13. Aromas of must with hints of fresh ground white peppercorn are accented by yeasty lemon peel. Slight tartness on the palete with bits of juicy orange citrus, notes of musty peach and an expected dry finish and mouthfeel. I’m finally out of this one and wish I had more. BERSERKER By @royalcitybrew ————— Kveik Tart Ale 4.7% abv ————— Another gem of a brew from my recent beer order from Royal City Brewing in Guelph. I’ll pretty much order anything that uses the mega hot Kveik yeast in it and I wish I had more cans of this one. Pouring a luminous lemony yellow, Berserker erupts with a bouquet of sharp lime and lemon peel. I also get notes of fuzzy peach candies and juicy orange. On the sip, the tartness in this ale is on point. It’s the perfect balance of sourness that’s delectable and not puckering. Juicy tropical flavours mesh with jolly rancher-like candy notes. It’s a perceived sweetness without actually being sweet. Quite unique! Finishes dry with a fruity thirst quenching aftertaste. This is a great beer that any sour fan needs to have on their radar. From the most recent #wellymixpack comes “Not A Word Spoken,” an apricot infused IPA. Even though I’ve sat on this beer longer than I should have, I have high hopes for this particular brew. Using apricot in conjunction with the correct hops makes for a symbiotic pairing in complimentary heaven. On the nose, sharp tropical fruits notes of papaya and pineapple. It pours with a somewhat gloppy-hazy body that drinks thick but not chunky. The apricot pushes through, on my palete, in more of a dried apricot kind of flavor. It’s not juicy and it’s clearly being overpowered by whatever amount of hops live in this beer. Speaking of which, the hop character is sticky and pungent with a slightly bready malt backbone. Look at this beer, just look at it! It’s a perfect example of a juicy, hazy, hoppy everything-you-could-possibly-ask-for in an IPA kinda beer. It’s stellar. This is the last of the Vermont beers currently hiding in my beer fridge. It’s a sad occasion but also a bit of a celebration. Vacation starts tomorrow so why not! Big shoutout to my beer mule friend @run_addiction. Thank you for the gracious hookup, much appreciated. Ok, back to this beer called “Dead Wax.” This beer comes from the legendary folks at @foambrewers. You should check them out, their beers are liquid gold for the most part. Dead Wax is a king among hazy juice boi’s. I could easily mistake this for a glass of O.J. if it were Saturday morning right now. There’s peach, a bit of pine, kefir leaf and a silky bitterness that slots this beer right into crushable territory. Did I mention this is 6.8%? It drinks more like a session beer than a big IPA, that’s how smooth and deadly it is. Mouthfeel is almost creamy with a subtle tropical juice aftertaste. This is a work of art. Dora #15 by @badlandsbrewing. Sometimes there are no words aside from DAMN! What a total beauty of a beer. Well deployed lactose sugar for a subtle creaminess that accents the peachy citrus hop character. Super easy going, highly drinkable and mega delicious. 🤡 FREAKSHOW CRUSH By @theflyingmonkeys ————— Hazy IPA 7.3% abv ————— Looks at this juicy hazebomb. Just look at it. Is it dry-hopped orange juice? It might be. Or it might be a pretty damn good hazy beer. I do very much appreciate the wacky stuff that the good people at @theflyingmonkeys churn out. Cupcake Panda Killer (I think I have those in the correct order) and Live Transmission are two stalwarts that I go back to time and time again. This beer, FREAKSHOW Crush, is highly drinkable hazy IPA. It’s right down the middle for style and flavour and that’s a good thing. I like IPA’s like this that have the right level of hoppy goodness without over saturating my palete. I could drink this all night. Aromas of fresh citrus and orange peel are present but mellow. A sip of this beer is a citrus wallop of grapefruit, lemon and light bits of peach. It’s mega thirst quenching and easy going on the finish. Can art is also quite stellar! 💥 ⠀ FOCAL BANGER⠀ BY @alchemistbeer ⠀ —————⠀ Vermont IPA⠀ 6% abv⠀ —————⠀ It’s always a treat when a legendary craft beer such as Focal Banger lands in my possession. Yet another shout out to @pairingwithbeer for hooking me up with this epic beer at #BottleTradeClub 6. What a great beer this is! Pouring a golden orange with a delicate foam cap, this beer is bursting at the seams with aromas of prickly pear and luscious fresh cut pineapple. A sip is mildly tart on the tongue with mellow flavours of grapefruit and tropical citrus. My mouth is noticeably coated with a gritty lupulin coating. It’s a little hot with alcohol in the aftertaste too. That’s fun. The pairing of Citra and Mosaic are deadly. They have this sort of complimentary-amplifying affect on one another. 🦉 ⠀ HIGH GRADE⠀ By @hitachino_nest ⠀ —————⠀ 8% abv⠀ Strong Beer ⠀ —————⠀ Pours a murky brown with a delicate ring of foam. On the nose, burnt brown sugar, figs and roasted apple. There’s a theme of roasty notes and fruit much like a Belgian ale. Drinks like a Belgian ale. A mouthful is reminiscent of apple pie crust, with sweet baked apple notes mixed in with subtle orange marmalade. If that thanksgiving apple pie were a beer, this would be it. 🤘🏼⠀⠀ BOURBON BARREL AGED STOUT⠀⠀ By @manitoulinbrewing ⠀⠀ —————⠀⠀ 9% abv⠀⠀ STOUT⠀⠀ —————⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ This beer was a must have for me. Why? Well, I saw it on the trade table at #bottletradeclub a few weeks back at @rainhardbrewing. Turns out, there was a really cool story about its procurement and journey to the event, all summed up by Nick Purdy @pairingwithbeer . He has a great article on his website if you’d like to learn more. Search for the blog post titled “Manitoulin Brewing Co.” ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The trade went down something like this....⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ME: What’s that beer in the stubby? Is it a homebrew?⠀⠀ ⠀ NICK: It’s a one off Bourbon barrel aged stout that I picked up when I was up in Manitoulin Island. ⠀ ⠀⠀ ME: I want it because it looks like it was brewed and bottled in someone’s bathroom.⠀The label was probably written by a 4 year old. Could be beer, could be moonshine. I’m willing to take that risk!⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ I can’t quite remember what I traded for this —maybe Nick can fill in the details— nevertheless, I’m glad it went down. This is a stout like no other. With a typical barrel aged stout, you expect roasty Malts, layers of chocolate, a robust palete and some sort of wood or booze character imparted by the barrel itself. This beer, goes in a completely different direction. ⠀ ⠀ On the nose, damp woody smell, light bits of black strap moleasses, dark stone fruits and figs.⠀It’s unexpectedly mello and fruity. Kinda surprising. A mouthful of this beer jostles between flavours of deep plum, dark fruits, a subtle hint of chocolate, and a leathery finish. As it warms up, a slight note of cherry brandy begins to poke through in the finish. This is not your typical stout and it’s a surprisingly pleasing beer. 🐼 ⠀ KILLER CUPCAKE PANDA⠀ By @theflyingmonkeys ⠀ —————⠀ Double IPA⠀ 8.3% abv⠀ —————⠀ Flying monkeys continues to impress me with their unique twists on popular IPA styles. Live Transmission REALLY caught my palete’s attention with it’s unique coconut tea infusion. This trend of twisted styles continues here with Killer Cupcake Panda.⠀ ⠀ Pouring a hazy and bright mandarin orange, Killer Cupcake Panda is aggressively loaded with a nose of sharp orange sherbet and sweet icing sugar. A sip is like a cupcake depth charge of bitter papaya, mandarin orange and a vibrant cake-like vanilla. Are there sprinkles in here too? Maybe! It really does taste like an IPA with a cupcake jammed into it. I think that this should be categorized as a Pastry IPA. That makes the most amount of sense here. 🍫 ⠀ THRILLER⠀ By @stalwartbrewing ⠀ —————⠀ Chocolate Double Porter⠀ 7.8% abv⠀ —————⠀ Ah, the first beer that I’m cracking open from Bottle Trade Club has arrived! Big shoutout to @run_addiction for trading me for this chocolately delight. ⠀ ⠀ As far as porters go, this leans heavily towards being a chocolate overdose stout. It’s dark, opaque black and stops all light sources from shining through. Foam: a mocha coloured froth reminiscent of a freshly poured flat white coffee. Aromas of dark cherry and creamy cocoa are delicate and silky.⠀the cherry becomes more pronounced as the beer warms up too. ⠀ A sip of this beer is nothing short of a chocolate miracle. The chocolate malt blends smoothly with the cacao nibs in a creamy and full bodied sip. It’s rich, thick and drinks like a meal. Excellent beer! 🐶 ⠀ MONTY⠀ By @greatlakesbeer ⠀ —————⠀ English Mild⠀ 3.7% abv⠀ —————⠀ Nobody seems to be able to nail an English mild on this side of the pond. There, I said it. I’ve had a bunch and they always come close, yet always feel like there’s something missing. Is it the water? Lack of good English mild recipes? Brewers that want to overly hop every beer because that’s what’s trendy? Who knows. So I approach this style with a lacklustre sense of optimism. ⠀ ⠀ Monty is an English mild. He’s 3.7% and comes from the nice folks over at GLB. Pouring a rusty copper, Monty is a toasty little beer with aromas of acrid malt over a fruity ale yeast. So far, so good. Carbonation is relatively low as is should be to this style. A sip of this beer is light on dark bready malt that comes across a touch too toasty for my liking. 🍒 ⠀ CHERRY PORTER⠀ By @macleansales ⠀ —————⠀ Porter With Sour Cherries⠀ 5.6% abv⠀ —————⠀ I’m a Porter fan. That’s right, Stout’s bastard older brother deserves some love as well. This beer, takes a very solid Porter recipe and adds sour cherry to accent and compliment the melange of malt and yeast. The sour cherries make a perfect addition. ⠀ ⠀ Cherry Porter has one of the most distinct dark chocolate aromas that I have ever smelled in a beer. It’s unmistakable and defined.
