The maid had scurried off to find Claire, leaving Jamie alone in the living room of the de Rohan’s country home. The interior was...nauseating, but that assessment was about as far as he got to taking in his surroundings. Where he stood was not what was important here, but rather what would happen in the next hour or so. 

Quite frankly, Jamie wasn’t sure what to expect when he finally came face to face with his wife again. They hadn’t seen each other in two months, and even then, the last time they had seen one another, Claire had been bleeding out on the ground in the Bois de Boulogne. Having seen just how much blood had soaked her gown, how pale she had grown, Jamie was surprised she had survived. By some miracle, though, she had. 

But this was all he knew. That Claire lived. He knew nothing of their child, whether it had lived or died, whether it had been a boy or a girl, did it have a name? It felt disconcerting not to know whether or not he should be grieving. Most of the time, therefore, he shifted between wearing his shroud of numbness or being indecently angry at himself for what he had let happen. He’d sworn to protect them both, and not only had he failed, but he had been the cause of all this pain. 

Grinding his teeth as the anger at himself came back to the forefront, he paced to the other side of the room, staring unseeingly out of the window. Would Claire be angry at him too? Or had two months apart been enough time for her to forgive him? Would she ever forgive him for that matter? Not just for his responsibility for the whole damn mess, but for abandoning her when she needed him most? 

It was useless to think on such things, he knew that, for his questions would be answered as soon as the maid returned with Claire. And if she refused to see him, well then he would still have his answers.

Spending time in a hotel room wasn't as bad as most people made it out to be. It might have been due to the fact that the hotel room she was in was the penthouse suite on the top floor.
