Bluntly put, he doesn’t. Edward doesn’t go out of his way to ‘look after’ his appearance at all. He wears his favorite color because he likes it, and it’s a tough guy color. So he wears red. Black is because it helps with grease and oil stains from his automail. Alphonse is the one who takes care of his hair because braiding is hard when you can’t feel anything on your right side, so that’s his brother’s handy work.
His hair is long because he likes it that way. He made a promise to Alphonse that he wouldn’t cut his hair until they fixed this mess, but he’s grown attached to it so even when they fix everything he’ll probably keep it long. It’ll probably be long for the rest of his life, honestly.
But Al is the one reminding him to care for it, because he’ll roll out of bed in a funk, and I mean that by hit the floor when he slides out of bed in a pile of blankets. Edward runs late a lot when it comes to military meetings (much to Roy’s dismay) so he had a bad habit of running out of the room in a mad dash to get to where he needs to be on time. As I said in my last post, bless Alphonse Elric for chasing after him with all the things he’s forgotten.
It wouldn’t be the first time Al has waited for Ed to get done with his meeting with Mustang in order to bring him his black jacket, and help him fix his hair. The office has seen him with his hair down more than once and he’s been told how unprofessional that is more than once as well. He’s like this just because he doesn’t put weight on his own well being. He’s more concerned about getting things done then what he looks like.
He’s just as bad about taking a bath, and other forms of self grooming. He just doesn’t make time for them. He’s got to get his brother’s body back, his own well-being comes second. So when it comes time to go back to the hotel room and turn in for the day he just passes out instead of doing anything to care for himself. He doesn’t remember to do anything unless reminded, much like eating. It’s been more often then not that there will already be a bath running when he tries to just pass out in order to get him into it. Bless Alphonse Elric for all he puts up with.
