I love this kind of music.  It’s what has drawn me to Squirrel Flower, Molly Drake, Totally Mild,  and Elvis Presley.  And if I’m being honest, I came to this after listening to the amazing “Early Dolly” collection that just showed up on Bandcamp and is due for a mid-July release.

Yes, this all has a “country” feel, but the field is wide-open.  The Lostines are from the South (recorded in New Orleans, released on Tape Dad, a label based in Fayetteville, Arkansas).

I’m clearly enthralled with female singers whose vocals can beautifully carry songs.  In the last two years alone this fact has led me to purchase Molly Drake, Alvvays, Tiny Ruins, Weather Station, Totally Mild, and Bay Kee.

Squirrel Flower has a gifted vocalist in Ella Williams.  The other musicians help create a sound just like the groups mentioned above.  But this sound is decidedly louder than any of the bands mentioned above.  One reader described the guitar sound as “bruising”.  Bandcamp mentions that this is sparse…but don’t confuse sparse with light.  This is sparse but dense.  In that sense it reminds me of the feeling I get when listening to Monroe Mustang.

Squirrel Flower are from Boston, Massachusetts.  This is available on cassette from It Takes Time Records in New York.

This release throws us back several years. Let's return to a time when we were listening to Bay Kee, Totally Mild, Beach House and Squirrel Flower. Really, it should take us back to Beach House, Opal, Melby and the like.

Benz have released music on Malmö, Sweden's Rama Lama label. It just has an outstanding pop/chill feel. And I didn't mean that to semi-rhyme.
