- How far would you go for gay fanfiction?
- uhmmm.... idk. Unrelated, my vacation in Toulon with the Valvengers was lovely
La Valette du Var, le quartier Baudouvin.
April 13 / 20, 2025 - French militant group “Rights of French Prisoners” (Droit Des Prisonniers Français - DDPF) has attacked multiple prisons in Toulon, Marseille, Villepinte, Nîmes, Luynes and more. Mostly arson and at least one shooting attack with automatic weapons. The group offers bounties in exchange for addresses of prison personnel; from €1000,- for normal prison guards up to €5000,- for the address of the highest-ranking prison warden. [video]
I am so obsessed with Valjean and Javert's ocean and river symbolism
I mean, I love the fact that Victor Hugo spends all this time establishing a nautical metaphor around Valjean (Billows and shadows) so that a direct comparison can be made between his connection to the sea and Javert's connection to the river.
After all, the two bodies of water are more similar than dissimilar, but the ways in which they differ shape what they are on a fundamental level.
Oceans are directionless. They are temperamental, violent, prone to sudden changes in the weather. They are cold, cruel, and most importantly vast. An ocean's strength is undefeated, for the sea cannot be tamed by any man on earth.
So too was Toulon era Valjean.
Rivers, on the other hand, are dictated by their direction. They have a current, a flow, and they maintain it for their entire existence. Though they can be violent, humanity has learnt to harness their rage to their own benefit - societies are built upon the banks of rivers. A river may not be as strong as the sea, but it is not lawless. It is stable, predictable, and easily understood.
As was Javert.
How can anyone not love Les Mis? In it, Victor Hugo shows us what happens when an ocean is tamed and a river loses it's direction.
