Here some pictures from Mabul island in Sabah-Borneo. Locals, mostly fishermen, live on platforms on the sea. There is no garbage collection or waste management /sewage system on the island and when there is low tide all the garbage in the water is visible. This represents a problem at different levels: 1-the sea is polluted and locals catch fish that are eating their own garbage and they are swimming and living l in highly polluted water 2- With high tide turtles and other animals come to find food around the sea shore. Therefore they do not go hunting food in the sea and this affects the whole ecosystem. Moreover they eat a lot of plastic, which can bring them to death. High end resorts on the island are highly separated from locals and tourists do not really sea what is happening, generating even more polarization and increasing the need for plastic #plastification #pollution #sealife #fisherman #mabul #borneo #malasya #sabah #theothersideoftourism #globalization #gentrification #tourismeffect (at Mabul Island)
