Sleep Deprived in Santiago

What a week. Tomorrow is our last full day in Santiago before heading 10 hours south to Pucon. We were a little slow to get into the swing of things - jetlag, a huge hole in the ozone layer and a foreign language really packs a punch. While we have definitely only scratched the surface of this very interesting city, I think we have made the most of the time we had here. 

We explored all the sites of the city, including a huge cathedral built in the 16th century, beautiful neo classical government buildings and seemingly endless green spaces. We caught the funicular to the top of Cerro San Cristobal to visit the Virgin, do a bit of hiking (not meaning to...) and drink some Mote (some sort of delicious drink made with peaches and barley). Dylan of course also had to try a 1L bottle of the local beer, which he found very agreeable.

We travelled to the eastern border of Chile through Maipo Valley, hiking into the Andes and relaxing in Banos Colina hot springs. The scenery is almost unbelievable and the climate changes SO quickly. We also made it to the west coast, to the port towns of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar - beautiful, unique collections of slap together, brightly coloured houses and fantastic graffiti.

Of course we couldn´t escape without a trip to a vineyard. In the Casablanca valley we visited Indómita, a premier winery owned by a super rich Chilean/Italian family. We learned all about wine, particularly where flavours like tobacco, pineapple and strawberry come from! We finished up with a tasting sitting on comfortable leather couches looking out over a glorious panorama of the region. 

Not bad. Not bad at all.
