This is what a worker at the academy, nicknamed ‘pbkid01′ had to say about the incident:
“I work at the Academy. The tow planes (the ones you see here) took off like that because the winds at the academy reached 55 mph which caused enough lift to get them airborn from basically sitting still. The powered flight program cancelled their flying for that day because of the high winds but the old 94th commander (who was later fired for other reasons) refused to cancel ops for the day and almost lost 3 out of the 7 tow planes had it not been for great pilots… Also cadets could have been seriously injured if a glider would have cartwheeled.”
It almost felt like the God watching from up above playing around with paper planes while blowing wind to make them fly!
P.S. What is a Microburst? It happens when a very localized column of air sink is caused by intense downdraft within a thunderstorm. Two types are recognized: wet microbursts and dry microbursts. What makes them dangerous to aircraft is the fact that they are huge and unpredictable. The sheer power can topple many a planes and cause fatality. There have been recorded instances where they have toppled huge, fully grown trees.
