My Guide To A Beautiful Town
Hi, friends! I was contemplating doing this when I reset Wishfall and showing a guided tutorial with pictures on how I go about decorating towns, but upon request I’ll share a few tips with you guys on how I went about decorating both Ophylix and Olympus. This isn’t necessarily the only way to do it, this is just how I do it. The key is to be creative in your own way. ;)
Tips before starting: Try and get the perfect town status before you start making your town all pretty. It’s easiest at the beginning of the game because you have a butt-ton of trees everywhere. Set your ordinance to beautiful, raid the island, whatever. Plant all the trees and flowers and put some cheap PWPs around and get that golden watering can. You can destroy all this later in step one. ;) Having the golden can will help you out tremendously in the long-run.
Step 1: Creating a blank slate
Depending on who you ask, some people might tell you to collect all your dreamies first before you starting setting up your town. I’ve had the game since it launched two years ago and I still don’t have all my dreamies, so I say ain’t no body got time for that. I know how plot resetting works. (If you don’t visit my guide on acnlolympus.tumblr ^^)
So, what I like to do first is give myself a blank canvas to work with. As soon as possible I cut down all of my trees and move all of my flowers onto the beach so they’re out of the way. Setting your town on beautiful helps cause then you don’t have to worry about watering them.
A signature feature of mine since it can feel a bit awkward having no trees in town (how are we breathing?!) I usually plant some of my town fruit along the train tracks at the top of my map, one space away from the tracks and one space away from each other. (otherwise they won’t grow)
Step 2: Finding the perfect path
I actually do this long in advance, but at this point I pick the path I want to use. Typically with my towns I go for a certain theme. Ophylix is just a beautiful fairy-tale town. Olympus is a modern, port town. I look for paths that I feel suit the overall theme and go from there. There’s tons of sites out there for paths and lots on tumblr. bidoofcrossing has tons and so does mischacrossing. These two blogs also leave sources for all of the qrs they post so feel free to check out the source if you like the paths because typically you can find similar paths from the person who actually made them. http://tobimorieko.blog.fc2.com/blog-category-4.html This is where I get all the paths for Ophylix. :)
Don’t be afraid to try several different paths out in your town. I can’t tell you how many paths have been put out in Ophylix to be tested. You can look back at the past couple months and see how many times I’ve changed the path.
(everyone wave at Cat’s house. Hi, Cat’s house!)
Step 3: Connecting the dots
A lot of people seem to struggle with laying down paths. I see this in a lot of forums where people will ask for advice on laying down paths. It really depends on your town. I will tell you I flat lucked out on Ophylix. I didn’t plot reset or have any idea what to do with my town at first in fact for like 6 months I didn’t even want to do anything with my town. It was actually my sister’s town (DA: 4000-2626-0394) that inspired me to actually start decorating. I started collecting my dreamies in like October or November I think? Ophylix is solely a town that I worked around the imperfections of. Don’t be discouraged.
Start with big places like the plaza, town hall, Re-tail, and the train station. Figure out where you want to place bridges and get a “main” path running through your town. This process takes time! People expect their towns to magically transform over night. Did I mention I’ve had Ophylix since launch? It’s still not done. How you lay your path really depends on what kind of path you picked and the shape of your map. I’m really OCD so I like my paths to be straight. Visit Ophylix. Not straight enough? Visit Olympus. Straight af. There’s an allure to foresty towns that have a lot of winding, seemingly random paths...just not for OCD people. I have to tell myself to be calm in those towns.
Step 4: Planning Your Town
One thing I typically do is I sit down with my DS and a pen and paper (cause I’m old-fashioned) and I write down kind of a general idea of how I want my town. You can also upload a picture of your map onto miiverse and save it to your computer and edit it on paint or photoshop or whatever software pleases you. Important things to plan in advance: location of bridges, spots for PWPs such as the cafe and police station as well as other PWPs you want, and spots for villagers. You can be as general or as specific as you want with these things. Again I’m OCD af, so I like to be really specific. I do this after I place down paths because then I know for sure where I have space and where I don’t want villagers to go.
Step 5: Filling In the Gaps
As you’ll see in Ophylix (not so much in Olympus) I have a lot of smaller paths that I’ve worked in to make maneuvering the town easier. Sometimes I had spacing issues and couldn’t fit my 2 tile path through. Have a couple different path options in mind if you have a 2 or more tile wide path find a smaller, single path or a couple singles you can alternate to have some options. Some paths come with a single space option, the one I have doesn’t, but I like it a lot so I improvised.
This is the point where you start connecting smaller things like PWPs to the main path and villager houses. Leave as much space as you want for landscaping around these areas. Getting all the PWPs and collecting your dreamies take time. Some people are really aggressive and get all their dreamies in a month some how. I am not one of those people cause I’m in college and real life takes priority a lot nowadays. (that and my dreamies change like every other day. I have a lot of love for teh villagers)
If you are having trouble deciding on dreamies let me give you my advice for how I pick: I literally google “ACNL villagers” and go to a site that lets me physically see what all of them look like. I open all of the ones I like in a new tab. Sometimes that creates like 40 tabs. (I have three towns, okay?) Then I reflect inside myself and ask what the overall theme I’m going for is. I eliminate villagers that don’t quite fit. Then I look again at who is left and I rank them in order of who I absolutely can’t not have down. Depending on how many I’ve chosen and how far away from 10 slots I am, I eliminate the few off the bottom. Then I start comparing villagers to each other and deciding who I like over whom and balancing personalities as much as I care to. (pro-tip: I usually don’t) Your dreamies are yours. Pick the villagers that make YOU happy. Don’t just chase fads because they change. I have a lot of popular villagers because I genuinely think they’re adorable and they make me happy.
Step 6: Auditioning for the Next Season of Hoarding: Buried Alive
This stage requires that you have the garden shop.
Once you have the garden shop unlocked start buying trees saplings like mad. When it gets upgraded, buy all the bush starts. All of them. It’s good also at this point to come up with an idea of what flowers you want in your town. Again with the OCD, my flowers are all color coordinated around areas and houses. I sit with my handy-dandy notebook and I figure out what colors combos I want in each area including bushes. If I need regular flowers I buy them from the shop. You can buy 50 flowers and get the silver watering can for now, but my expert advice would be to get the golden watering can before you start. This is because it makes growing hybrids easier.
Which is my next point. Once you have an idea of what flower colors you want get to breeding. Get your golden can and start setting up breeding pairs in empty spots in town or on your beach if you’re afraid a villager will plot on them by accident. Get as many as you can. It’s better to have extra to give out later than to not have enough and have to be the person asking.
Ophylix doesn’t even have room for any more bushes really and I still hoard them. I do have two other incomplete towns though. I use my museum rooms and beach to store them all. I have a hefty stash. Don’t ever stop buying bushes while you are setting up your town. You run out of them quickly.
Step 7: LANDSCAPING! *chorus of angels*
Landscaping is one of the most fun parts in my opinion. (but I’m also a huge dork)
Landscaping isn’t as hard as people make it out to be. At least not when you’re OCD. Start with areas individually then move on to lining paths. So start with say the plaza. I usually go for planting bushes one space apart all the way around with trees in the gaps up front. I put flowers in the middle everywhere else. For areas surrounding villager houses I boarder them in with bushes and flowers. For example:
Sometimes you don’t have room to do that though so do what you can, but if you plan right you can leave room to do that. I was totally lucky in this case because Pango was a starting villager. She’s always been there. I just made that spot work.
When landscaping keep in mind that you can only plant 12 bushes connected in a row and that includes if there’s a tree. You’ll be able to tell when you’ve reached this limit because your bushes will start dying. Sometimes you can get a bit more creative with landscaping.
It’s really up to you. Like most things, how you decorate is completely a limit of your own imagination. Don’t be afraid to visit dreams of towns you admire for ideas. Everyone has their own unique style when it comes to decorating. Always remember that you are the one that has to load up this town and look at it everyday. Don’t worry about making a town that people will envy. Make a town that makes you want to play each day because YOU like to look at it. Why do you think I still religiously play Ophylix? Most people quit way before the point I’m at.
I’ll probably make a better one of these. (one that is less rambly) when I reset Wishfall and create a post with pictures demonstrating the steps to hopefully help you guys even more. Don’t be afraid to ask around for people to visit and critique your town, and never take criticism personally. Some people are bad at giving it, that doesn’t mean your town sucks. Take their ideas with a grain of salt as, again, it is your town, but contemplate the different perspective.
I hope this helped! Something you can do at any point in this process is decorate your house. So if ever you get tired of landscaping or putting down paths do some work in your house. My houses aren’t all finished either, so usually when people come and comment “I’m guessing Cat/Ruby’s house is still under construction?” I’m like yeah, obviously. What gave it away? The overall lack of doneness? I typically ignore those comments unless they give advice on how to specifically improve it. (like, maybe add this piece of furniture or try this rug).
Good luck everyone! Always feel free to message me with questions or if you want me to visit your town and give pointers. I’m always willing to give advice and I’ll never tell you your town sucks when it’s being worked on. Happy decorating!
