Town Mountain - Dance Me Down Please (2024) … The Woodstock Sessions …
My new favourite Bruce Springsteen song:
Song Review(s): Town Mountain - “So Far Away” and “Strangers”
Genre means little to Town Mountain.
Embracing equal parts bluegrass, country and rock ‘n’ roll music, the band previews its next project with songs written and recorded first by Dire Straits and the Kinks.
Sounding nothing like the originals, yet both eminently recognizable, “So Far Away” and “Strangers” announce the Jan. 18, 2024, arrival of the Woodstock Sessions EP, recorded at Levon Helm’s famous Barn studios. The songs mix country music’s drums, pedal steel guitar and twangy vocals with bluegrass’ acoustic instrumentation to hone Town Mountain’s signature approach to music-making.
“Helm is one of, if not the, biggest influences on this band as a whole,” the group said in a statement. “He was a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, but definitely down-home.”

Song of the day: Down Low by Town Mountain
I showed this song to my dad months ago (we’re both big Tyler Childers fans) and he said something about not really liking it, but today he realized how good it is lol
Album Review: Town Mountain - Lines in the Levee
What serves Town Mountain so well on stage - standing at the crossroads of bluegrass, country and rock ‘n’ roll - is less successful in the studio.
The band’s latest LP, Lines in the Levee, displays all these personas in an uneven affair whose 45-minute runtime is like a cruise along a rolling rural road full of ups and downs.
The group comes out of the gate, engines revving, with a title track that seems to imagine what the Band might’ve been like as a bluegrass outfit.
The coasting begins as Town Mountain namechecks itself on the country-rock “Firebound Road” and wraps itself in red-white-and-blue dysfunction on the steel-heavy “American Family.” There’s even a short-shelf-life COVID song, “Daydream Quarantina.”
There’s nothing unlistenable among the 11 uptempo, but mostly uninspiring, tracks. Nor is there much to lure the listener back for regular listens. The best advice is to save the cash, spend it on a concert ticket and experience Town Mountain where it does its best work - on a stage.
To that end, read Sound Bites’ review of the band’s audacious 2019 gig in Nelsonville, Ohio, here.
