Previous students of the Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy used to come back and show off their beautiful bubs (and day-out high-heels). From the 1940s, this pic is now part of the State Library of Victoria picture collection.
No disposable nappies, no cloth ones with elasticised bits and plastic backed covers, and no stretchy ready-made fabrics. Oh, good lord, can you imagine having to wash and dry real wool tights and outfits all the time? The wee cardies and jumpers were almost certainly hand-knitted, and if they were dressmaking students these ladies may well have also made themselves the suits and blouses. I don’t know their names, so I’m going to say that’s Jessie with baby Reg on the left, and Bev with Peg on the right.
