3 Tips to Avoid a Toxic Divorce
3 Tips to Avoiding a Toxic Divorce
Most people facing divorce want to do so peaceably and with dignity. However, we know from both the headlines and water cooler that many people allow anger, fear and frustration to get in the way of their goals and turn their divorce into a toxic conflict. Our tips today revolve around the idea that divorce should not and does not have to be a costly and never ending conflict. While you cannot control the behavior of your spouse, you can take actions to be better able to manage divorce from your seat.
1. Let go of the idea of winning. No matter what course your divorce takes, both parties are walking away without things that are important to them. Refusing to compromise and fighting over issues is costly, both emotionally and financially. When you do find yourself going to war over something, take a step back and come up with the reason why this will be worth fighting for in 5 years. If your answer is, "it's the principal of the thing", consider re-considering.
2. Stay healthy. Do not under estimate the effect emotional distress has on your physical health and vice versa. You cannot make good decisions when you are exhausted, sick or hung over. Eat right and drink lots of water. Let yourself rest and sleep. Work out and do not self-medicate. And don't forget the health of your spirit! Call friends, go out, be with people!
3. Keep your eye on your bright future. Even if your divorce does take an ugly turn, remind yourself that the end result of divorce allows you to start over. You do not have to wait to start planning for your new life - start today! This is your time in life, make of it what you have always wanted.
