This quote in the Alaimo reading reminded me of queer theorist Jack Halberstam’s understanding of failure. The immateriality of MCS, as claimed by scientists who believe it is a psychological rather than medical problem, actually provides opportunities within queer theory’s understanding of failure. In failing to meet standards of other medical problems, mediations for MCS can also be understood outside of the realm of traditional western medical science. This can be both powerful and frustrating, however, as ideally straying from the norm can give opportunities, but because of the monopoly western medicine has over the modern US society without acceptance into the medical field it can be difficult to find treatment and legal repercussions for sickness caused by chemicals.
