Once every eight months, like clockwork, I remember the Penumbra Podcast’s Second Citadel plot line exists and I randomly become obsessed with Damien the Pious again.

Pride's rolled around again and I'd like to make some silly joke, but honestly I'm just really happy to have found fiction podcasts because tbh it's made me so much happier in my queer identity

Religious trauma(?)

I grew up in very conservative Christian household that I'm still in, and I carried a lot of the honestly disgusting beliefs of my parents for years. I didn't even know gay or trans people existed until I was like 11. Around 12 I learned what aromantic and asexual meant, and I realized those fit a lot of the feeling I'd lacked my whole life. I came out as aroace, my friends and parents didn't care too much, but in the church I had everything from being told 'well kids shouldn't be forced into relationships in the first place' to 'I think you have trauma', the first statement being from a lady I just met for 'Christian counseling' and the other being from my youth pastor that I use to go to the same homeschool group with.

When I turned 13 I was dealing with extreme internalized transphobia, I came out to a few friends and pretended I was happy with my identity around them, but honestly I was praying every night to be accepted by god. I hated my body and my mind I couldn't find any real peace in myself. Eventually I stopped caring, I had to give up religion to find some calm, and I'm still unlearning the years of toxic beliefs, I don't hate religion, but it hurt me more than it helped me. I stopped caring about my body, and focused more on accepting my mind. My identity grew and changed, but even now I'm still aroace, and trans.

I was never allowed to consume queer media, and any media I did consume with queer characters had them as background characters, as stereotypes, or didn't have any trans or aro, or ace characters. I didn't feel seen by any of it.

Cut to 2022-2023, I started Night Vale and was surprised that the main character was openly talking about another man in the first episode. The more podcasts I listened to, the more unique and diverse characters I've been able to hear stories about. Hearing so many ace or aro characters, so many trans characters in all different walks of life and their transitions. Hearing teens and adults and hell, even the occasional elderly queer, makes me remember how beautiful it is to just be queer and alive.

I just feel like some people don't know how much it actually means for some people to hear these things treated so casually, to hear characters be treated like people instead of being the 'problem' or just being a flat character that has no real anything. I'm so greatful for all the people who've made the fiction podcasts I've been able to listen to. Honestly it's just been a nice escape from the world around me, I have to walk on eggshells in the real world so I don't out myself to my parents, I have to be careful what I say so I don't get lectured or yelled at, for a few hours a day I go to work, and for a few hours I get to visit a world where things are different. I visit a world with characters who don't care about who people are. It's very nice
