Emi Liveblogs: Revolutionary Girl Utena Ep13, Tracing a Path
This is a recap episode so there’s very little new stuff to share but there is a bit.
Shadow girls set us up letting us know there’s MORE duels to come (yay for a new arc!)
First shot of Dios in the present day, interestingly: his face is silhouetted throughout the episode.
The duels happened in a prearranged order, with prearranged motives. It’s almost like they choose the same sort of people ever duel cycle! Oh wait...
Anyways the first is friendship, Utena’s motive for dueling Saionji in the first place. His second duel is called “choice” do you remember Utena’s choice? Stay a Duelist or throw the match, she stayed.
“Reason” is Miki’s and I guess it’s about having a reason to fight? Miki wants to find the feeling of Kozue’s piano and that’s his reason.
Juri’s duel is called “Love”. Juri’s whole thing about miracles stems from unrequited love. Love is a miracle, by proving miracles exist (Utena’s improbable win) love was proved to exist as well. This arc and Shiori will be interesting.
Nanami and “adoration” takes no explaining.
Touga’s first duel is “conviction” and what did he test in Utena? Her convictions, her beliefs. He screwed with her saying he was her prince and then tested her commitment to the Duels. If she quit and went back to being a regular student, she’s have failed this duel.
His second duel is “self”. Or: what Utena took back. I find it interesting that these were premeditated enough to line up with how these volital teenagers would react to each other and their circumstances.
Annnd here’s the damn Black Rose.
