ADVENT: DID YOU KNOW? Old fashioned Treats of Christmas

1. Sugarplums: In the 1600s sugarplums were a sugarcoated seed. They were mostly made of currants and raisins boiled in sugar many times over to make a hard candy.

2. Oranges: Children in the 19th and 20th centuries were excited to get oranges for Christmas because all citrus fruits had to be shipped from faraway places. Usually only the rich could enjoy them.

3. Gingerbread: gingerbread appeared in Europe at the end of the 11th century. By adding ginger to baked goods the bread was preserved. Master bakers created elaborate gingerbread works of art decorated with frosting and gold leaf. Nuremberg is the "Gingerbread Capital of the World" and still holds the title today.

Traditions

In Romania on 30th of November is celebrated Saint Andrew and there are some traditions.One of them says that if a girl puts holy basil under the pillow she will dream her soulmate.The basil has to be consacrated on the day of January 6. I don't believe or better saying I have not the courage to make this but my grandma did it when she was young and she dreams a blonde young boy with blue eyes around 10,my grandma says he was really my grandpa because when did it she was like 17 and actually she is 7 years older than my grandpa that has blue eyes and was blonde.
