You can do anything with a character.

GIVEN that you put thought into how you take them from canon to canon. If it's abrupt, like in My Immortal where everyone is a gothic sex hound, it makes no sense. However, if you spend chapters on developing them and giving reasons for their discrepancies from canon, it makes a whole lot of sense. You can do this with ships, too! Take nepeta x damara. Makes no sense, right? Unless you read Trailerstuck(it's on archive of our own, i really recommend it), which says that Damara was an excellent artist. She practiced using East Beforan methods, and taught Nepeta who was drawing shittily posed anime girls. Nepeta look sup to her, and in this AU everyone is related. It takes the "incestuous slurry" of canon and puts it in your face--it makes sense. You realize that troll DNA doesn't work like humans. Inbreeding isn't a thing. Trolls of all ages get together and it isn't strange. Back to nepeta/damara. Nepeta is getting lessons from this strange older troll who doesn't know much english and tends to stay away from other trolls. She has been given special attention and gets Damara to start learning more English. They bond and, well, you can make the connection. If you give your ships and head canons enough context they can make perfect sense. Because yeah, that character could totally react like that! They could become this! As long as you have patience and an understanding on how your character works, you can write anything.
