Starting in January, NYC Metro-North and LIRR commuters will have to pay a $2 surcharge fee if they don't activate their tickets before boar
Beginning on January 4, 2026, not only will the prices for the Metro-North and LIRR increase up to 4.5%, but commuters will also face a fine if they don’t activate their tickets before boarding or if they need to purchase a ticket onboard.
“The surcharge for tickets purchased onboard from a conductor will increase by $2,” the MTA announced in the press release. “There will be an equivalent surcharge for tickets purchased or activated onboard using the TrainTime app.”

It warns that “Customers who repeatedly purchase or activate mobile tickets onboard will be subject to the surcharge after an escalating series of warnings.”

When you purchase a ticket in the app, commuters are directed to activate it before boarding. Under the new policies, if you don’t activate your ticket before boarding the train, the MTA will charge you $2. Also, if you didn’t purchase your ticket before boarding the train, you will have to pay for your ticket with the added $2 surcharge.

According to the MTA, passengers are supposed to activate tickets right before boarding, but many face issues with activating their tickets in app because there is no cell service on certain tracks. Now passengers are saying they are going back to paper tickets to avoid the surcharge and any other issues with the MTA.
