When we talk about reinforcing our dogs, a lot of people think that just means offering a treat, but it is so much more than that. Some dogs are highly food motivated and will never get tired of taking treats, but for most dogs, there is more to life than food, and you've got to use every urge to keep them engaged and happy.
This doesn't mean letting them do whatever they want. It means adapting your reinforcement techniques to what they want most in the moment. If your dog wants to get in the trash, then yes, we are looking at a food motivator. If they want to run after smaller animals, we want a chase motivator, like a fetch toy or really any toy you can play chase with your dog with. If they want to dig and scratch, a puzzle toy would be right up their alley. If they just wanna be in your lap, affection will be your best motivator. If they like to sit and stare at you but don't get close enough to pet, praise is the reinforcer that you want to go for.
Waffles is a mixed bag. She loves treats, but when she gets full, I know that she will take a different motivator based on her behavior. I can either throw some treats in her Search and Destroy Toybox or use it to ask her to find a toy if she seems excited, and she can pick out a toy that she knows is the most fun based on what urge she is feeling. If she wants praise and I offer her toybox, she will obediently put her nose in it then look back at me for approval. If she wants affection, she will put her nose in the toybox and then come charging at me with no toy for snuggles. As we continue to build our communication and trust with our dogs, we will be able to reward them even more effectively.
