Sail #4 - 27/05/16

A light southeasterly and a flood tide took me to Millcove for an over-nighter. It was a beat all the way there and when the wind got very light at the mouth of the harbour, I thought about heading back in. Getting out into the flood tide helped progress, and a second wind came in when I was close to Tralong harbour so I pressed on to Millcove.

As you can see from the photos, it’s shark season, and there were a number of basking sharks feeding at the surface despite the overcast conditions.

July 13th, 2014.

There is a lovely beach at the head of Tralong bay, that is blessed by the lack of parking nearby, so it is only visited by those prepared to walk! I briefly landed on the beach the night before(as the tide was falling) but didn't bring the camera. Interestingly the west side of the beach has been eroded by the previous winters storms, exposing tree stumps and peat bog. This forest was presumably drowned by rising sea levels, around four thousand years ago, the same sea level rise that turned lough hyne to a saltwater lake from a freshwater lake, forming the rapids I visited earlier.
