Thoughts on US Election 2016

This post will probably go unnoticed, but I wanna get this one.

This election has been, by far, one of the most dramatic I have witnessed thus far in my life. If anything, it has really made me question the whole "concept" of democracy. This election is less about the candidates themselves, but rather about American society as a whole. It is more than obvious that many Americans are angry, upset, and "fearful" about the outcome of Donald Trump becoming the 45th President. However, democracy happened, and history was made. My first point is about democracy. The West, and the United States especially, prides itself on its "democracy." We love our "democracy." "Democracy" defines us as a society. The West is so much better than the rest of the world because of its "democracy." In fact, The West loves its "democracy" so much, that it invades other countries in order to export said "democracy" and "civilize" the "uncivilized." Am I wrong? Think about all the countries that the United States has gotten involved in, for the sole purpose of implementing "democracy." But, when our own prized "democracy" does not work out for us, we incite riots and we get angry. This, to me, makes no sense. Democracy means "rule of the people." It is as simple as that. Part of this democracy is choice and freedom. The freedom to pick the choice that best suits your needs. This is why there are multiple candidates representing multiple parties. Almost anyone can run for office, and the majority of the population can vote. This means that sometimes, you may end up with two crazies, like Trump and Clinton, running for office. And, you have to make that choice. Sometimes in a democracy, you will have to choose the lesser of two evils. Although Donald Trump is by no means the ideal candidate, he absolutely has the right to run for office, simply because this is a democracy. How come all of a sudden, all those who loved their democracy are trying to end his candidacy? Is that not also infringing upon his own democratic rights? Having a one-party, one-candidate system is "communist" and "fascist," right? The U.S. sent troops abroad to end those two terrible things, to implement democracy, choice, and freedom. I feel as if many people are confused, and often forget this fact. You cannot vouch for democracy when it works for you, and when you're forcing it upon other nations, and then shun it when you do not get what you want. Because people rule in a democracy, it is evident that the people wanted Donald Trump to be their president. I believe that people should take a step back, and reflect on not only the American society, but the Western society as a whole, and truly think about how it ended up like this. I personally believe that people have been using both candidates as a scapegoat for deeper problems that no one seems to be addressing. If the people did not want Trump or Hillary, both would have been long gone. Second, most people are entirely omitting the voter turnout of this election. Little over 50% of all eligible voters actually cast a ballot yesterday. Nearly half the American population did not vote in this election. This is massive. This speaks volumes about American society. This election could have turned out so much differently had people actually exercised their democratic right to vote. Which brings me back again - why are people not exercising their democratic rights that their brag about on the international stage? Trump voters clearly went to the polls en masse and elected their candidate. Something clearly went wrong on the other side. Lastly, this election shattered my faith in the media, and in journalism. This election has been nothing but media attacks, tabloids, and just downright dishonesty. I do not think this can even be called an "election." This was more an ad-hominem attack campaign. "Let us dig up as much garbage in the candidates' pasts and use them as platform points!" This is not democracy. This is not an election. This was a media war. I strongly urge you all to genuinely do your own research, apart from watching the news and reading online "news sources," and actually watch the speeches of all candidates to truly inform yourselves.
