Summary:

Patroclus told her who he was. He told her about his past, about his betrothed, about his own father. He told her about the months he had spent in Sherwood Forest before she joined him. He told her about his thievery and she told him the peasants had named him: Robin Hood.

“Why have they named me?”

Briseis lounged next to their fire. The nights had become long and bitterly dark by then. It was still before the first snowfall, but the two of them were the only living things not vanished with winter’s approach other than the redwings and fieldfares which still twittered among the barren trees. “I do not know. I believe many of them feel a kinship with you.”

“They do?” That astounded Patroclus. “For what reason?”

“We all wish to steal from the nobles at times, but precious few have the guts. You don’t steal from those who need their coin. The villagers in Nottingham, at least, are convinced of that.”

Start from the beginning

Summary:

He picked a leaf from the tree, where he was still nestled in its limbs. Instead of looking at Patroclus, he examined the leaf. He had always had this quality about him, intensely observant and curious. Just as he had when they were children, he slowly started to peel away pieces of the leaf along its veins. “Even if I hadn’t seen you, he has to be a dimwit to think I would have believed him. If you had died… Even if you were hurt, I would have known. I would have felt it.” 

We're connected, you and I. From any distance. Forever.

Achilles had said that often when they were young. He had said it to Patroclus before he left.

He shook his head, finally dropping the bare remnants of the leaf. It dropped like a dead weight toward the ground, robbed of its graceful design. Patroclus wasn't sure how to respond. He found himself wishing that Achilles was not up in the tree. After so many years, he wished not to be separated by distance any longer.

Finally, Achilles' eyes returned to him. “Are you happy?” 

Patroclus' eyes snapped back up to him from where they had been following the skeleton leaf's descent. 

"Yes."

"Good, then that is all that matters." Strangely, it sounded as if Achilles was trying to convince himself.
