samakro didn't realise he was trans until he was already almost graduated from the academy, and spent his last few months being extremely anxious about what he should do with this knowledge, and at one point even considered just pretending to be cis indefinitely, until he realised that was only making him miserable
he decided to be very very Extra abt his coming out, so he decided to come out by completely changing his entire look and presenting as masc specifically on the day of his graduation from the academy, he asked the administration to change his gender marker and then just showed up being very obviously Gender as he graduated
he was confident enough in this that people just,,, didn't question it, and he privately considers this his crowning achievement.
before he realised he was trans, he used to have very low self-esteem about his appearance, which he put down to considering himself to be ugly, and he dressed very properly and appropriately, basically presenting as the Model Cadet bc he didn't know what else to do with himself
after he came out, even before any hrt, he realised he actually quite liked his appearance when he was presenting mor masculine, as his correct gender, and started actually finding his style and experimenting with different clothes, and getting the myriad piercings and cool-as-shit haircut that he loopholed his way past the CEDF dress code on several extremely niche technicalities in laws from at latest 150 years ago
despite the fact that he came out as trans very publicly, it's not common knowledge that Samakro Is Trans, and whilst he doesn't actively try to be stealth, he doesn't go out of his way to make his gender identity as a trans man known, so he's like... stealth via apathy :)
also i refuse to believe chiss names are gendered because of how personalised they are . therefore, the chiss have no concept of a deadname, & samakro's sudden coming-out and subsequent transition remain the smoothest fucking thing he's ever done
a lot of his worries abt coming out were alleviated by the fact that he didn't ever have to come out verbally in any official capacity, he just,, transitioned and everyone kind of caught on.
he did get some shit for his gender identity after coming out, especially from one of the ufsa syndics that really seemed to have it out for him, but at that point after the initial coming-out, samakro was confident enough in himself to just shrug it off
due to this experience, however, he's still rather standoffish in all his correspondences with the ufsa, but considering samakro has been known to just Be Like That, it's not much of a deal
most of his COs tended to not give a shit that samakro was trans - in retrospect, most of them probably didn't even know
incidentally, the springhawk has a very high concentration of trans personnel. samakro, for his part, swears down that this was a coincidence.
kharill, his first officer (now the second-officer-to-his-first-officer) is also trans, and he gave samakro a trans-themed mug once, just because. nobody has ever seen this mug just.... around, not even to be washed, and kharill assumed that this was because samakro had gotten rid of it, which- fair, it's his mug, he can do what he wants with it - until one day, kharill ended up bringing some of samakro's paperwork from his office to the break room, just for convenience's sake, and walked in on Samakro hand-washing the now very well-loved trans mug in the sink with a very jealous air about him
kharill maintains it's the cutest thing he's ever seen, and has the holo he snapped of a very startled samakro being protective over his mug as the home screen on his questis to this day.
samakro begrudgingly allows this, and only because kharill got him the mug in the first place
