Trans Zoro

Zoro and Kuina, sitting in a dojo, being told the basics of swordsmanship. The two are prodigies when they whip their katana blades in slashing lines through the air, impressing every sensei they come across. Kuina, especially, has such grace and lightness and brutality in her style, her blows look to kill. She holds two swords and Zoro wonders how she manages such a heavy weight. With his one sword, clumsily slashing, hacking at nothing, Zoro is told he can never compare to Kuina’s beautiful femininity, like the killer courtesans of Wano.

Kuina wants to become the greatest swordsman in the world, and Zoro does too. But Kuina beats Zoro again and again and again, and Zoro keeps getting up to fight, again and again and again. The two are constantly in competition, wills unmatched, fighting with equal vigor, but still not equal prowess. 

Kuina wins their 100th battle, their 500th, their 1000th, their 2000th. Zoro doesn’t cry. He doesn’t let himself cry. To cry is to be a woman, and to be a woman is- is wrong to Zoro, for reasons he can’t understand. Kuina says it’s okay. She says, my dad says girls can’t be swordsmen, our bodies will get worse and decay and weaken as age comes. We’re good now, but we’ll never be the greatest. Zoro takes it as a challenge.

And the next day Kuina dies. Falls down the stairs and dies. Zoro wants to take her dream, become the greatest swordsman for her. His body will not weaken as he ages like a girl’s would. So he becomes a man. He becomes strong enough to wield two swords like she did, then takes hers as a third. He wields it between his teeth in a grin.

Years later, he meets Ivankov. Somewhere along the Grand Line. And he begs her to make the change final, permanent. So his body won’t weaken like Kuina’s father said. Like Kuina’s had. And Zoro feels his body change, and he feels more... comfortable. Happier. His swords feel lighter in his hands, in his teeth. He is Roronoa Zoro, and he will become the greatest swordsman.
