i love hanging out with my pre-transition friends. two beautiful, gorgeous women and their big masc guy.

i stand there supportingly while they buy cute jewelry and give thumbs up when they try on dresses. i bask in how fun femininity is. i hold the camera for their cute pictures. i let them put makeup on me and dress me up. it looks funny. lipstick on a pig, i tell them. we do everything we used to.

they don’t care that i’m trans. they don’t care that i’m a guy. they share girlhood with me, even though i gave that away as soon as i could. they treat me well. they give me love.

i used to worry i’d miss these rituals once i stopped being a girl. i used to worry my friendships would change the moment i come out.

i worried for nothing.

now i’m sitting with them and talking. we gossip about our recent romances and assholes at our jobs. i tell them happily about the cashier who called me sir.

they don’t see me as a woman anymore. our dynamic has changed. but it’s also stayed the same in so many beautiful ways.
