Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not
I don’t personally appreciate the term Trans* with an asterisk, although it is an attempt at being inclusive. “trans*: originally used to include explicitly both transsexual and transgender, or (now usually) to indicate the inclusion of gender identities such as gender-fluid, agender, etc., alongside transsexual and transgender.” I am a firm believer that being trans exceeds gender binaries. Trans is not limited to being a man or woman; trans is non-conforming, nonbinary, and fluid. I feel adding an asterisk is like saying “this person is trans, but...” with that “but” being an addendum. (Which is exactly what asterisks are used for, to mark footnotes or addenda.)
If trans* includes non-conforming or fluid folks, then that implies that trans (sans asterisk) does not, making it a binary trans-man and trans-woman term, and I’m not really for that. It feels like some weird, misplaced form of gatekeeping.
HOWEVER!
I am not nonbinary. I am not genderfluid. And I don’t get to dictate whether or not there’s an asterisk. If folks are more comfortable using one, then use it, and I will use one too if that’s something that you feel is important to your identity.
I’m curious to see how other trans/* folk feel about this, so feel free to chime in. Also curious if you prefer folks or folx.
