All That Matters is Us
So I had a story a while back where it just listed a bunch of memories TJ was thinking about before proposing to Cyrus. This was one of the memories brought up and I decided to do a longer story with it.
As per usual TJ is trans.
It was Tuesday night and TJ was sitting in his dorm. It was late and he had taken his last final exam earlier that day. His only other class to finish just had a written paper as the final. It wasn't due until Friday so he figured he would stay on campus the next couple days to work on it and then leave Friday night for the holiday. His roommate already left so he would have the room to himself to focus and work.
Before he could start working on the paper though, he knew he had to call Cyrus. Cyrus had gotten into Harvard and TJ had gotten into the State school on a basketball scholarship. So the nightly call was their routine. They would call each other every night and talk about each other's day. It was a way to drive back the sadness from not seeing the person they spent the last 4 and half years seeing every day.
They missed each other so much and it hurt very badly to have Cyrus that far away. He would notice how sad Cyrus would sound on the phone lately, and honestly, he knew the feeling. That’s why he was so excited for winter break. He would finally get to see Cyrus again.
But for tonight, a phone call would have to do. He knew his boyfriend just finished his last final earlier and wanted to ask him about it. He dialed his phone and waited for Cyrus to pick up. When he did though, TJ's heart dropped.
"Hello..." A broken voice said from the other side of the line. His voice sounded tense.
"Hey Cy..." TJ's voice is littered with hints of worry. He spoke softly as if he was nervous that speaking too loudly may cause everything around them to collapse. He continues, "Is everything okay?"
"No...Teej. It’s not." TJ hears a sniffle at the end of the sentence. Cyrus has been crying.
"What's wrong, Underdog?"
"Please don't call me that." Cyrus says coarsely.
"I've always called you that. Cyrus, why don't you want me to call you that?"
"Because it’s only going to make this harder."
TJ feels like his heart is in his stomach. He chokes out "Make...what harder?" His voice is barely a whisper. Part of him knows the answer. He hears another snivel on the phone.
"TJ, baby. I love you so much. " Cyrus' voice starts to get shaky. "And I miss you much every day and it hurts to not see you."
"Und--Cyrus...I miss you too. But winter break is coming up. We'll see each other soon." TJ tries to sound optimistic.
Cyrus' practically whimpers as he says "Seeing you is just going to hurt more. Because I know it is only temporary and then we'll go back to our schools, and I'll go back to missing you every day. TJ, it is getting harder and harder to hear your voice because it will never be the same as seeing you every day., I don't think I can do this anymore. I think w--
"No." TJ interrupts him. "Please don't finish that sentence. If you do, that means this is real. " TJ now has a few rebel tears streaking down his face.
"TJ please. I...just can't do this long distance thing. It hurts too much. " Cyrus sounds like he is about to shatter into a million pieces.
"So this is really it then?! You are breaking up with me? Just like that?!" TJ didn't mean to yell but he couldn't help it. It feels like his entire world is about to crash in on him. "How can you throw away what we have? Like this is nothing? Cyrus...don't...please."
"I'm so sorry...I will always love you." That’s the last thing TJ hears before the line goes dead.
Without thinking, TJ chucks his phone across the room, shattering the screen. He doesn't even have the energy to care. His entire body hurts. He's shaking and tears are flowing freely. He sinks to the floor from where he had been standing. It feels like the room is spinning.
His mind starts to wander, playing old memories like they happened yesterday. He thinks back to the first time he saw Cyrus. He was just some cute boy who came with Buffy to her basketball tryouts. But then he became more than that.
He was the cute boy that TJ got a muffin for.
He was the cute boy who he pushed high up in the air on the swings because he knew he was braver than he thought.
He was the cute boy who made him feel better and better about himself every time they talked.
He was the cute boy who stole his heart seventh grade year and hasn’t given it back since.
He was the cute boy who held his hand that day at the bench.
He was the cute boy who loved him no matter what.
He was the cute boy who cheered him on at every basketball game throughout highschool.
He was the cute boy who practically moved into the hospital room last year when he got his top surgery.
He was the cute boy who gave him the best night of his life at prom last year.
He was the cute boy who encouraged TJ to work towards becoming a special ed teacher and truly believed him.
TJ had watch him go from that cute boy to the best man possible. He had no doubt in his mind that Cyrus was his one. Cyrus even promised that they would stay together the day they left for seperate colleges. But apparently, Cyrus made a promise his heart couldn't keep.
TJ's face was stained with tears. His face was red and blotchy. He couldn't bring himself to get up off the floor and get into bed. So he laid on the floor and cried until he fell asleep. At that moment he was thankful him roommate wasn't there to see him. Maybe one day he would get over Cyrus and move on but not tonight.
The next day, he felt so lifeless. He was too tired to cry anymore. But his body felt heavy. The day went by in a haze. He didn't leave his room all day He knows he wrote his paper but couldn't tell you what it is about. He doesn't care enough.
He is thinking about staying on campus for break. He doesn't know if he could handle seeing their shared friends this year. What if he ran into Cyrus? Afterall, he is one of Amber's Amber's bestfriends. He can't look into those big brown eyes that belong to the man that broke his heart. Being in Shadyside seems like a terrible idea this year. When he calls (he uses the neighbor's phone as his is not exactly turning on.) his mom to tell her, he tries to hide his sadness. He makes up some excuse about a two week seminar they are offering. They both know he is lying. She is sad he is isn't coming home but doesn't pressure him.
The rest of the day, his entire body felt burdensome and every breath was labored. He tried not to dwell on thoughts of Cyrus, but kept finding himself drifting into memories. His head and heart were defying him. He tries to go to bed early but can't sleep. His mind is too distracted. He tried to focus on the storm outside his window but it was no help. Eventually a few tears start to hit his pillow and before long he is sobbing.
He is so sad. And so angry. They were supposed to be end game. They were supposed to be each other's happy endings. He never wanted anyone else. Them being soulmates was his truth to hold onto. But if they couldn't work, then maybe nothing else can. It was like Cyrus was his anchor that had suddenly been cut away leaving him to float wildly in this sea of hopelessness. He groans to himself at how pathetic he sounded in his own head. He kept laying there in self pity and hurt.
That is until there is a light knock on the door at 3am. TJ listens for a moment to make sure he isn't imagining it. But then there is another light tap.
TJ puts his pillow over his head. It was probably just one of the drunk guys a few doors down, partying one more time before break. He heard them yelling earlier. Maybe if he ignores it, it will go away.
But the knocking keeps on.
So he jumps out of bed and slowly makes his way to the door. He wipes his tear stain face in an attempt to hide that he has been up all night sobbing.
He swings the door open fully expecting to be greeted by a drunk frat boy. But he freezes when he sees who it really is.
From across the doorway, a skinny brown eyed boy with short brunette hair, soaking wet from the storm, stared back at him.
TJ chokes out. "Cyrus..."
"Can....can....I come in? Please?"
Instead of answering, TJ asks, "What are you doing here, Cy?" His voice was cautious like he was afraid to believe his eyes.
"I...I'm so sorry, TJ." Cyrus steps closer, one foot inside the room. His face is painted with guilt and fear.
TJ instinctively takes a step back as Cyrus stepped closer. He crosses his arms as if trying to put up an invisible wall between them. He begins, his voice barely a whisper. "If you are sorry, then why did you do it in the first place? Why did you break my heart?"
The brunette looks down, away from the green eyes staring back. He replies, "I didn't mean t--"
"What?" TJ interrupts. "You didn't mean to call me and end everything we ever had like it was nothing?!" He whisper shouts as to not wake the remainder of the people on the floor. It comes off harsher than he meant to.
"Teej...again I am so sorry. Please just give me a chance. Let me come in and talk at least." He gives a desperate look.
TJ never could resist those puppy dog eyes even when he is angry. So he let's out a sigh and steps to the side to let Cyrus in without a word. Cyrus comes in and shuts the door behind him. TJ looks at the other boy as he take a seat on the edge of his bed. Cyrus doesn't dare press his luck by sitting down next to him, opting instead to stand in front of him just out of arms reach.
Cyrus begins speaking, trying to remain composed. "Breaking up with you was the biggest mistake of my life, you know that?"
TJ turns his head to the side and stay quiet. He was still hurting so bad because of what Cyrus did.
The shorter boy just let's out a sad sigh and continues, "I was just so lonely...and scared."
TJ looks back him. He features scrunched up in confusion. "Wait, why were you scared?"
Cyrus turns bright red. He runs his fingers through the back of his hair. "Its just Shadyside is a small place. And I am the only person you have ever dated and I was scared I was holding you back. What if there was some great guy you met here and I was preventing you from being happy...and I just...I..I don't know.."
Suddenly TJ is standing up with his arms thrown around Cyrus. He pulls him into a tight hug despite the smaller boy still being soaking wet. It didn't matter to him. "God for a boy who got into Harvard, you are so oblivious. I don't want anyone else. No one can replace you."
Cyrus buries his face into TJ's shoulder. The blonde feels warm tears mixing with the cold wetness of the rain coming from the other boy. Cyrus whispers over and over again, "I'm so sorry...so sorry...sorry..." TJ grips him tighter threatening never to let go.
After a bit, TJ pulls back to look Cyrus in the face. "So what now?'
"I don't want us to be over." Cyrus says quietly. He adds "But long distance is too hard for me. I miss you so much."
"Oh..." TJ looks away. He should of known this was too good to be true. Cyrus just wanted to end it in person, see him one last time. TJ knows he should pull his arms away but can't because then it is really the end. He feels a tear well up in him eye
But then a soft hand reaches up and wipes away the tear as quick as it came. Cyrus' fingers linger on the taller boy's cheek. "Don't cry my not-so-scary-basketball-guy." TJ is facing Cyrus again. He is leaning into Cyrus' hand. The brunette continues. "I was just saying I can't so long distance, so...I dropped out of Harvard and transferred my credits here. As of 12 hours ago, we officially go to the same school."
"What?" TJ says in shock. "You left Harvard for me?"
"For us, Teej. I love being with you and you are here, so I wanna be here. I realized as soon as we hung up last night what a mistake I made. I tried to call you back but it went right to voicemail." TJ thinks about his shattered phone. "So I just came here to tell you in person." Cyrus grins.
"I love you so much, Muffin."
"I love you, too, Teej." Cyrus looks up at his boyfriend's lips before leaning into a soft kiss. TJ returns the kiss as they enjoy this moment together.
Soon after, Cyrus changes into a dry, clean pair of TJ's sweat pants and a T-shirt. They cuddle together on TJ's bed and doze off happily. They have alot to talk about but that can wait until the morning. For now, all that matters is each other.
three minutes early
thank you so much!!!
47: A kiss paired with a tight hug, knocking the breath out of the person being hugged.
tw// gender dysphoria, periods
Cyrus tapped his fingers impatiently against the arm of the bench he was sitting on. The wind whistled through the trees around him, runners’ feet pounded against the pavement, birds sang overhead. The atmosphere was altogether entirely too cheery for Cyrus’s current predicament.
He checked his watch for the seventh time that morning, exhaling at the realization that he had about ten minutes before TJ was supposed to show up. He’d gone over the conversation they’d have at least twelve times in his head.
TJ would show up at least five minutes late. He’d try to apologize for everything, but Cyrus would say everything he had to say. He’d break up with him, and everything would be fine.
He inhaled sharply at the thought of breaking up with TJ, but he promised himself it’d be okay. They hadn’t seen each other in over a week, and he’d survived. Plus, he reasoned, TJ was the one who’d needed ‘space’ after he made a mistake. Cyrus could have forgiven him if he’d bothered to apologize within a few days, but clearly, nine days later, he didn’t really care. Therefore, Cyrus had concluded that it was best to break it off now. He’d texted TJ that morning, demanding (or rather, begging) to see him. He’d planned every detail, down to the order in which he’d tie his shoes.
Then it fell apart.
One detail at a time, everything disintegrated.
First, TJ showed up three minutes early.
His feet fell heavy on the pavement as he walked up to the bench, hands firmly rooted in his pockets. Cyrus glanced up, eyes wide. TJ’s eyebrows furrowed, a silent question.
“You’re three minutes early.”
“Hello to you, too.”
“Don’t do that.”
“Okay, then. Why don’t you give talking a go?”
“Uh, yeah, okay. What the hell, TJ? You kicked me out of your house for no reason and yelled at me when I asked why, then asked for space, didn’t speak to me for nine days, and still haven’t apologized! We’ve been together for almost six months and I still feel like I don’t even know you!”
“Cy, I can explain-”
“Don’t call me that.” Cyrus crossed his arms over his chest and looked away. “I think we should break up.”
Then, TJ didn’t give up.
“Okay, just let me explain, please? Then, if you still want to, you can- uh- break up with me.” His voice broke at the end of his sentence as he obviously struggled not to cry.
Cyrus raised an eyebrow, gesturing for him to go on. “Go ahead.”
“You said you feel like you don’t know me, but you do, for the most part, I swear.” Cyrus opened his mouth to speak, but TJ kept talking anyway. “There’s really just one thing I haven’t told you. When I freaked out and kicked you out, it was because my period came. I realized when we woke up that I bled on my sheets, and didn’t want you to see it before I could get the chance to come out to you. Then, it lasted longer than usual- like a full week- and I felt really shitty the whole time. I couldn’t face talking to you the whole time because I was bleeding and I had awful cramps and I was crying and eating ice cream for like five out of seven of those days and I felt like I’d ruined everything. And if I did talk to you, I’d have to explain why I did that and I didn’t want to tell you because I felt like a fucking girl and it sucked.” He took a deep breath as he finished.
“Okay, so you’re trans?”
“Did I forget to say that?” Cyrus nodded, smiling a little. “Well, I am.”
“Okay. Thank you for telling me, that was really brave.”
“Are you still gonna break up with me?”
“Because you freaked out and had a really awful week and didn’t even feel safe and comfortable enough to talk to your boyfriend? No.” TJ exhaled, now fully tearing up as he let Cyrus crush him in a hug, lips crashing together as they both cried.
They were entirely in public, but neither could be bothered to care.
“I’m sorry,” TJ whispered.
“I love you,” Cyrus responded, resting their foreheads together. “Even if you ruined my plan.
“I don’t even want to know.”
“You were three minutes early!”
Headcannon idea
TJ and Marty being trans disasters and looking up a wiki how on "How to do a proper bro hug" and getting extremely confused so they cave in and ask Joanna how to do a bro hug and he reveals he has no clue how he does it he just does so Buffy has to show them the way of the bro hug
My muse came to me and whispered you must draw trans TJ, and I was like oh damn you’re right, so here he is!
He’s euphoric and blushy bc Cyrus got him an new binder and called him handsome 😌
Also, coincidentally (or not?) it’s Transgender Day of Remembrance today (Nov. 20th). So, please take a moment to mourn the trans lives that have been lost, and appreciate those of us that are still here today. Thank you. 💗
Joke: “TJ” stands for Tyrus Jyrus.
Woke: “TJ” doesn’t stand for anything bc TJ is trans and just liked how the name sounded. He didn’t really think about having the letters stand for something.
@anarcoqueer1994 Their trans TJ fic killed me and I started this before the last(?) chapter and yall should go read it
also Cyrus looks like crap but I'm extremely happy with how TJ turned out
Crack My Heart Open
a Tyrus fic with trans TJ, now on AO3!
Awhile ago, I saw a post about TJ and Cyrus playing tag with each other, and it reminded me of this time I was playing “chalk tag” and accidentally touched a girl’s chest, and then I thought about how uncomfortable & dysphoric I would be if that happened to me.
And thus, the strange premise for this fic was born, and I’ve gradually worked on it for the past few months. I almost scrapped it, but I hope someone appreciates or resonates with it. So, tadaaaa, here it finally is, all 2,945 words
TW: dysphoria, anxiety, shame, fear of rejection, and mentions of casual transphobia (society and parents can be difficult)
But it’s not super heavy, imo, and the ending is very sweet and gender-affirming! :)
