love this for them
kind of obsessed w this parallel actually
I LOVE. PARALLELS
literally characters of all time
thinking. thinking about valjean spending so much time reading completely on his own & having no one at all to talk to or discuss things with & then having cosette to tell about everything. him having all his thoughts & reflections on the nature of the world be so completely internal and then finally having someone to explain them to. the way he's so consistently quiet and reserved most of the time we see him but how he evidently spends like all his time talking to cosette. wah
ngl this line is making me a little bonkers actually not just in the desperation of wishing that the only man who could ruin you & whose company you've purposefully avoided was there now so you could give yourself up. but also more generally like. what if this guy who's set against you in every way is also the only guy in the world who could recognize you as yourself. what if your very existence as a person outside of your own thoughts rests entirely with him. how both agonizing & bizarrely intimate (in a fucked up way) it is to have there be only one guy ever who can possibly see through your disguise to the whole history of you underneath whether you like it or not
huh!
