Phoenix has always known who he was; for as long as he could remember he was Phoenix Wright, and nothing was going to change that. He was always about helping others out, too. He put others before himself, knew how to stand for what was right, and always kept strong in the face of danger—even if most of that was bluffing his way out of a problem.
Recently, Phoenix had opened a support group. With his job of being a lawyer on hold, he wanted to do anything he could to help people, and right now that meant helping people figure out who they are and providing them with an outlet. Really, it was his favorite thing at the Wright Anything Agency.
Usually the group was filled with the same faces; Larry, Apollo, Klavier, Gumshoe, even Edgeworth when she found the time to make it. Though today, Phoenix noticed something different, a kid around the age of eighteen. Squirrelly looking, with orange and blonde streaked through their brown hair. Phoenix couldn’t help but watch them, they seemed to nervously jump side to side, twirling their hair as everyone shared their stories and experiences.
“Wright Anything Support Group is now in session. Let’s take a minute to introduce ourselves.”
“Apollo Justice, twenty one years old. Trans boy.”
“Klavier Gavin, twenty three years old. Genderfluid.”
The names and stories went on, applauds and snacks seemed to be never ending. Suddenly shifting as the time for the new person to tell their story came up. They sat up, cleared their throat and let out a small sigh. “Wocky Kitaki, eighteen years old. Trans boy. My family doesn’t know I’m here. Told ‘em I was at a mafia meetin’. Actually, I’m a bit scared to be here. If y’know what I mean, homies”
Mafia? Phoenix could feel himself swallow a lump in his throat before he continued on, he’s heard of this kid before. The Kitakis were a huge mafia, one of the biggest in Japanifornia, and while he wanted to help, he also didn’t want to step on any toes. He lets out a warm, fatherly smile before shaking the boy’s hand.
“Well, thank you for coming Wocky, we know this took a lot of strength. After all, this is a huge step. We’re glad you’re here.”
A new case opens up, Phoenix looks over Apollo’s shoulder the whole time. Something about it seems all too familiar, all too important to him.
Wocky Kitaki? The name rings out. He’s heard that name before, not too long ago. Something about it keeps nagging at him, telling him to remember. Suddenly, the memories come flooding back as the boy’s face comes into view. He looks happy, much less afraid than when Phoenix saw him a year ago. Sitting on the floor in a circle, nervously twirling pieces of blonde hair between his fingers.
The case of a fiancé, accused of murdering a doctor. Something about it shakes Phoenix with memories of a certain young woman who broke his own heart, and he wants to help. He needs to help Wocky again, show him he isn’t alone. Wocky is innocent. He can tell, he’s too good of a person to murder.
The time in the detention center is different than usual, the conversation seems to be on the defendant himself, not his crimes. Phoenix knows. He knows Wocky is innocent.
“Wright dude! Y’got yer attorney’s badge back, bizzoy! That’s awesome!” Wocky seems to be glowing, voice deeper, and his entire perspective seems to have changed.
“You sound happier, Wocky. I take it things went well back home? You seemed nervous since your group session, and you didn’t return. It scared me.”
“Straight up, G! The fam was totally cool with it! They helped me out a bunch! Not to mention my snapplecake Alita is a nurse so she was straight up helpful with all of the transitioning stuff. Alita, maaan. What a babe.”
Phoenix let out a smile, something about Wocky reminded him of himself, the way he had faith in those around him. The way he was completely and utterly in love with his girl, the way he knew who he was and he didn’t let anyone stand in his way. Even the way he seemed to always put others before himself, even if it meant he was going to end up hurt in the process. It was nostalgic, it was fresh, it was comforting.
He felt the warmth rise in his chest as the visiting hours ended the detention center.
He was going to help Wocky one more time, and he wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way.
Wright Anything Support Group, now in session.
