Micro Apartments
A developer is finalizing New York City’s first modular residential building with 55 micro apartments. Their sizes range from 260 sq. ft. (24.2 sq. meters) to 360 sq. ft. (33.4 sq. meters). Current city laws prohibit constructing homes smaller than 400 square feet, but the city waived the regulation for this development to test the viability of smaller apartments.
Within one month 60,000 applicants entered the lottery for its 14 affordable units (priced between $949 and $1,490). The transformable furnitures, wich have been prominently featured in the building’s showroom and online videos, and which have been specifically designed to enable such small spaces to be functional as apartments, will not be part of the affordable units (except for selected Veterans).
