I know you've probably been asked this question, but out of all of Heisei Kamen Rider, which do you think had the best Transformation Trinkets?

I am going to divorce this entirely from my opinion of the series themselves because sometimes, great devices come out of terrible shows.  I will say it’s kind of a sad when the toy company comes up with a better idea than the TV writers though.

I find it amusing to think about this concept though.  For the first few series in Heisei there really were not trinkets as we know them now.  Kamen Rider Ryuki came closest with it’s card system:

And Kamen Rider Blade knocked it out of the park with the same basic idea:

But I don’t count cards as trinkets. they are collectibles for sure but trading cards are a much older concept than the plastic trinkets we get these days.

It wasn’t until we get to Kamen Rider W that we really get trinkets in force with the Gaia Memories.  They are REALLY cool in my opinion, like large USB sticks loaded with the powers of the Earth itself.

They aren’t the most interactive as all they are is gloried electronic noisemakers but they are inherently pretty cool thanks to their use in the show and what they represent.

The Gashats from Kamen Rider Ex-Aid are a lot like the Gaia Memories, electronic noisemakers but they do also have a visual component that sets them at a completely different level.  I think they are a pretty great transformation trinket for the modern day and take the basic concept brought in by Gaia Memories and elevating it to the next level.

I also really liked the Shift Cars from Kamen Rider Drive.  They had a dual purpose as both a transformation trinket and a toy car, so they could be played with even without the main belt, which is a nice change of pace! It helped that some of the shift cars had distinct personalities in the show, leading people to want to collect their favorites.

Now, I am not the biggest fan of the transformation trinkets and I’ve talked before about how I feel the collectibles angle of modern tokusatsu can, at time, hurt the narrative of the shows that are created to market them but a well done gimmick is a well done gimmick and I do like to give credit where credit is due.

You love your parents, and you’re sure they want what’s best for you. But, you want other things. You want friends, and you have interests they don’t approve of.

And so one day, you sneak out, and a strange talking bird gives you an easily-concealable piece of jewelry that allows you to become a magical girl. It’s not that you want to hurt your parents by fighting against their conquests, but you can be the person you want to be, a girl with friends, instead of the person they want you to be.

You’re just not sure how long you can keep up the double life.
