The Art of the Transformational Purchase, Or Leviās Gets Me
As consumers with limited resources, our responsibility is to use our disposable income on products and purchases that are needed, that make life better, that make things efficient and enjoyable, and letās face itā¦that make us happy. How often do consumers buy into products that are supposed to radically change their lives?
When looking at the retail industry, apart from necessity purchases, it seems weāre looking for products that will change us, transform us. Is he buying the latest, cutting-edge cell phone simply for utility, or to be seen as trendy? Did she buy that trench coat for a confidence-booster, or that high-end makeup kit to be seen asĀ desirable? Deep down, we want the products that we buy to transform our lives, or at least how we see our lives.
So how does a company use this human desire for transformation? By highlighting its product as transformative! Often, we recognize that internally we havenāt changed much, but maybe incrementally we are moving in the right direction with a particular purchase. Essentially, isnāt always about the product. It is, however, usually about how a product makes us feel. A good marketing campaign will focus on creating the feeling that a particular brand that āgets you,ā understands your dreams, and your desires.
Iāve been thinking a lot about the good ad campaigns; the campaigns that make a statement and stick with me long after Iāve viewed them. One campaign in particular has impressed me with the sheer cinematic nature of the story its tellingā¦and all about a simple pair of jeans... or is it? Leviās Go Forth campaign embodies the transformational purchase marketing Iāve described above. In the 2 commercials below, we see two scenarios with one overarching theme- you can take on the world if you really liveā¦not just exist. And what better way than to do that, than first figuring out your personal style is grounded in great jeans?
