I Love the Swapticon Promo Art of Happy Deinobot So Much
(Shame that Dinobot is Paired with Beast Wars Megatron and Not BW Optimus but whatever)
Concept art for what I had in mind for how a TF Swapticons cartoon might look with Autobots and Decepticons pairs from the toyline and characters made for the cartoon that’d ideally get toys too.
While the main leaders would probably still be Optimus and Megatron, taking a shot with the 80’s movie anniversary in full swing as of typing and Hot Rod already being in the toyline, the leaders in this pitch are Rodimus Prime and Clench.
Rodimus’ trailer is Arcee Magnus, while Clench’s, not pictured, is Mega-Octane.
Rodimus/Arcee, Blaster/Scrounge, Gears/Fanbelt & Grimlock/Warpath are the main Autobots.
While the war wages on Earth, the mysterious Enigma of Combination is uncovered by the Autobots and their human allies the chipper Braverman, the surly but good hearted JD and Braverman’s busybody cousin Heather. The Decepticons catch wind of the relic hoping to revive the Combiner process they once held mastery over on Cybertron. The spirit of Nexus Prime appears when Scrounge (trying to protect the kids) & Sky-Byte (just trying to wrestle it away) grab the Enigma, and a pulse wave affects all the Transformers, reformatting them into combinable pairs.
The Enigma disappears and the status quo is set: the Autobots and Decepticons being stuck with this new ability. The Autobots are mostly adaptable but the Decepticons struggle to Transform and work together.
Hilarious shenanigans ensue in battle, dealing with trying to be Robots in Disguise, and just around the base with personality clashes.
An action comedy series, the story does have small arcs involving trying to make traditional Combiners, both sides trying to secure Energon or other forms of energy in their current predicament, dealing with the mad scientist Dr. Archevil and his grandson Henry Masterson trying to take advantage of the Swapticon situation, the Decepticons trying to steal tech on Earth to try and either undo or improve their situation, and the Autobots and kids figuring out the best combos for a given situation.
A running gag is the Autobots dropping the kids off at home, but the parents initially think they see some nonsense jalopy until the Autobots recombine and fix themselves upon realizing a Big Cat with a car back end might not be the best thing for people to see.
With Rodimus being his own thing here alongside Arcee, the Bumblebee toy would instead be Bee and Hot Shot paired together, as shown in the rough studies.
A big emphasis would be wacky combinations, which is why Blaster/Scrounge, Sky-Byte/Skywarp, and so forth are on display. Initially them being paired off as they are is meant to be some Transformers are paired off with the "wrong" partner, mirroring an idea in the BotBots cartoon. But if they were supposed to have proper pairs as part of a Hasbro mandate, that's why we have Grimlock/Scowl, Warpath/Armorhide and Sky-Byte/Cybershark as an example of them having proper Vehicle/Beast Modes.
I didn't have a specific pair for Swoop and Powerglide, but you could probably fudge them as being a fighter jet with a 'scary face" painted on to explain the pteranodon head. If they had to have something else, it'd probably be Swoop/Strafe & Stratosphere/Powerglide.
While I didn't have a proper model for Bumblebee/Hot Shot, they'd be here to make sense of Shadow Striker, since I view her as Bee's actual rival even if Hasbro doesn't anymore since I liked the idea. Her partner is meant to be Go-Bots Crasher, but I used the alternate name Fracture, but I'm thinking of using "Crashbar" just to meet half way. I liked the idea of Shadow Striker and Crasher being a pair since they're both kind of nuts.
I have no particular reason why Blaster is a gorilla other than just trying to somewhat stick to the models used in the toy line, and I imagine if Soundwave were part of the toy line, he'd be a truck or something else instead of a boombox. Blaster being a gorilla I just thought was funny, kind of ties into Rillaboom in Pokemon, and I liked the Gizmoduck body idea when combined with Scrounge.
I thought of Emgo's Megs & Wave when I saw this. Those two have always butted heads! 😆
Blackarachnia and Tarantulus being Together Feels So Wrong
(I know they are Both Spiders But don't they Hate Each Other????)
Clench should've been Paired with Motormaster instead of Nemesis Prick
(In my Opinion anyway because I Fricking Hate Nemesis Prime So much)
When Snarl and Grimlock Paired Together like Three Times for some reason
(I'm gonna be Honest, I don't like the Cyberworld Design for Snarl, who looks like a Junkion to me)
There is something so Poetic about Ultra Magnus turning into a Trailer for Optimus Prime
So the Swapticons Ultra Magnus and Optimus Primes Toys are Not the Same but they are Similar
(WHAT)
