he's in the middle of a dream in which he's flying, his arms spread out as wings taking him high into the air and through the clouds. it's so vivid, he's almost convinced its real. he can feel the sun burning on his face and the grip of someone's hand in his own. he turns his head and smiling at him is phil, his neighbour and best friend since they were little, around when dan was four years old, to be precise.
the lester's had moved next door after the previous owners of the house had divorced, and quiet, isolated dan wasn't used to having friends in his hometown, mostly because it consisted of old people and scary teenagers looking to fight someone. the idea of someone as little as him only next door made him ecstatic, so when phil eventually arrived, the two became best friends instantly and it never changed after that. now dan's fourteen and phil's seventeen, they're completely inseparable and -
something jolts dan awake and he sits up, breathing heavily to try and collect himself. he leans across his bed to his side cabinet and picks up his iphone, yanking it out of the charger to hold it up to his face. he clicks the top button, squinting and letting out a small groan as the sudden light from the mobile nearly blinds him. he slowly reopens his eyes to read the time. 2:34. fuck.
he sighs, shuffling around to go back to sleep when something from outside catches his eye. a small, green light coming from his window and a noticeable buzzing sound makes him get up from his bed and move towards the source. he opens the window and leans out to see phil in the garden, staring at something above his head which dan can't quite make out from here.
"phil!" he whispers sharply so the boy can hear him. he doesn't turn around or acknowledge the call in any way, so dan tries again. "phil!"
everything in his body is telling him just go back to bed, it's nothing, but curiosity killed the cat and dan finds himself unlocking the back-door, running out into the garden to his fence, moving the loose panel and sliding through into the lester property. what he sees next makes him freeze on the spot, his jaws open and eyes wide. a large, metal disc in the air, spinning around and emitting a bright green light in a perfect circle on the ground, a circle which phil is slowly walking towards. it looks like a UFO, but it can't be a UFO because that's insane and aliens aren't real.
dan moves forward slightly. "phil," he tries, but the boy seems to be in a complete trance when one of his feet enter the green circle. he walks all the way into the light, and before dan's eyes he begins to rise up into the metal disc, just like in the movies to do with alien abduction.
dan does the only thing he can think to do at that moment, and runs into the light and grabs onto phil's leg to get him down. he feels himself being pulled up into the disc, and before he can even try to escape, something sharp is pushed into his neck and injected into his veins making everything fade to darkness.

it's mostly a blur when he wakes up. it takes a while for him to come round and when he does he finds himself in a small, dark room. he can see phil on the other side where it's slightly lit, but he notices scattered bruises along the boy's neck and face. they're small and rounded, almost like lovebites. dan crawls over to take a closer look but he's stopped. his feet are in metal chains attached to the wall, keeping him from going anywhere too far. he tries to break them apart with little success. he looks back at phil, who still seems unconscious.
"phil, wake up." he whispers, crawling back to his side of the room to release the tightness on his ankles where the chains are. the boy groans, lifting his hands up to his face where he presses gently against the bruises and he whimpers at the pain. dan does the same to his own face, hissing at the same pain along his own neck and across his cheekbones.
"are you okay?" dan says a little louder, causing phil to jump and the chains to rattle loudly against his body. "no, no it's okay, it's me, don't panic." he says softly, and phil immediately calms at the familiar voice.
"dan?" he says, his voice weak. "yeah, it's me."
"where are we?"
"you tell me, you were the one in a trance last night." the older boy goes quiet for a little while. "what?"
dan moves forward again so he can make out phil's face a little bit better. "i looked out my window and you were walking towards a metal thing that looked like a spaceship. i tried to get you to stop but you were like, hypnotised, and i ran after you and it lifted us up and now we're here."
phil runs a hand through his hair, thinking for a moment until his face falls in realisation. dan exhales slowly, the anxiety radiating between the two of them. "what is it?"
"we've been abducted. we've been abducted by aliens." dan bites his lip to stifle a laugh. "don't be stupid, phil, obviously we haven't been abducted by aliens because -"
"because aliens aren't real?" phil cuts him off, finishing his sentence bitterly. he gets to his feet, walking slowly to test the length of his chains. his go a little further than dan's, far enough that he can see through a tiny, round window on one side of the room where the only source of light is coming from. when he looks out he freezes, staring wide eyed at whatever's outside. dan looks up at him, curious and confused as to what's out there. "what is it?" he asks, his voice hesitant.
"aliens aren't real, are they?" phil asks, for reassurance. dan shakes his head slowly, still unaware as to what his best friend is trying to get at.
"well if they aren't real, come and have a look at this." the fourteen-year-old gets up slowly, moving towards the window until his chains pull at his feet and he can't go any more. he goes on his tiptoes, only just able to see what's outside. the earth, a full view of the earth surrounded by an infinite darkness apart from hundreds of thousands of tiny white dots, lighting up the surroundings and the planet below. he see's the moon too, not too far away from where they are.
"oh my god," he murmurs. "we're in space."
"you're finally awake. i did wonder if you were going to wake up at all, but i had faith and i was correct." a posh voice interrupts the pair's discovery. a boy with white blonde hair and piercing blue eyes which shine despite the lack of light enters the dark room. he's wearing a grey suit and white tie to match his hair, a small smirk fixed on his face. "i see you've already identified where we are, which shortens our conversation somewhat."
dan goes to run forward but hes limited by the chains. who are you?" phil says warily, speaking for the both of them. the light-haired boy's smirk grows. "i am the ship's president, but you can call me peter."
"why the fuck have you brought us up here?" dan spits. phil grabs his shoulder and pushes him backwards against the wall. "you need to keep calm and keep quiet before you get us in trouble, yeah?" the younger boy nods and rolls his eyes. there's a reason phil's the older one.
peter walks further into the room and up to the miniscule window, a sad expression falling on his face as he looks out. "in the next few days, there'll be another great war. disaster will strike the entire earth and will most likely destroy all of it. around five-hundred teenagers have been brought up to this spacecraft overnight in order to protect and save the most valuable of the human race, so that our species will go on and not be completely eradicated by the stupidity of our own actions."
phil's face falls. "what about our families, our parents?!" he cries, lunging forward to peter who sticks an arm out, holding the seventeen-year-old in place. "we cannot guarantee they haven't been picked up by a separate spacecraft, but we cannot guarantee they've been saved either. i'm sorry, philip." he goes to walk back out of the room where two larger men, presumably guards are standing at the door with large guns in their hands and what looks like sunglasses covering their eyes.
"this can't be happening," dan whine, sinking to his knees on the ground.
"it is." peter says before he closes the door. "you will be released upon further notice now that you understand your purpose here. i'd make myself at home, you're going to be living on here for a while. the rest of your lives, to be precise."
