I think one of the biggest problems with the transgender athlete debate is the stigma around it. The second someone says they support transgender athletes, people assume they don't care about fairness. If someone raises concerns about fairness, they're immediately labeled as hateful. That kind of environment makes it almost impossible to have real conversations or create good policies.
The science we have right now doesn't support the idea that every transgender athlete has the exact same athletic advantage. It depends on things like the sport, the event, when someone transitioned, how long they've been on hormone therapy, and the individual athlete. Researchers also say we still need more long term data before claiming there's one perfect solution for every sport.
Instead of waiting for controversy and reacting after the fact, we should be creating proactive systems that protect both inclusion and competitive fairness from the start.
Some ideas worth exploring are
Sport specific policies instead of one rule for every sport
Event specific eligibility standards because every sport demands different physical abilities
Independent scientific review panels that regularly update policies as new research comes out
Long term athlete monitoring to better understand how transition affects performance over time
Better youth participation guidelines so athletes and families know expectations before reaching elite competition
Investing in more research instead of letting politics drive the conversation
Creating open divisions in sports where it's practical, giving athletes another competitive pathway without replacing existing categories
Using multiple performance indicators, not just hormone levels, to better understand competitive differences where appropriate
None of these ideas are perfect, but they're proactive instead of reactive. Right now, we're mostly waiting until a controversy goes viral before anyone talks about solutions.
The conversation shouldn't be "Who wins the argument?" It should be "How do we build a system that's evidence based, fair, and respectful of everyone involved?" That's a much harder question, but it's also the one worth answering.

AEW legend Nyla Rose faced off against a cisgender opponent in Oklahoma — but it wasn’t the ring that hit back... it was the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission, which misgendered her and issued a formal reprimand. 😡
