As promised, here are some of the preliminary sketches for the DC Metro signage designs by Massimo Vignelli from the 1960s
. This first sketch is the most curious of all as it appears to show proposed signage attached to the walls. Harry Weese, the architect of the subway, stipulated that no signs would be affixed to the walls, hence the pylon system was created.
We've also included a few of the original photostat negatives for the standards manual for reference.
