Translating Cuba and Ballroom Date Night
By Max Prio
This past week the Cuban American Student Association had two events back to back. One was all work, really trying to make a difference in the world. The next was all play, and we danced for hours.
Our Translating Cuba events occur at least once a semester and we all come together to read and pass on the words of those living in our homeland. Dozens of Cuban bloggers have found ways to get their first hand accounts of what life is like on the island. From writing their articles on a cell phone and texting them to someone with access to free unregulated internet, to reciting their articles over a phone call to be transcribed on the web, these people go through so much just to have their voices heard. We do our best to translate those articles into as many languages as possible. Come to our next event to help us with our cause.
Ballroom Date Night was a blast. Many of our members and friends attended to learn how to move like us hispanics do. There were instructors teaching salsa, bachata, and merengue so everyone was trying something a little new. It was nice to have some bonding time with so many people from different cultures, just enjoying such a large part of our cultures.
Keep an eye out for our event in March. It's going to be a BIG one!
