Oh god's above, why hasn't anyone stopped me from getting into this translating business ?
On one hand I want to do justice to the original author, and preserve some of their style, but on the other, a lot of things and expressions that work in English do not work or have no equivalent in French.
can't believe I'm googling synonyms for "fucker" for my job
who knew that translating stand-up with dumb puns and cultural references would be easier than a bbc documentary about sharks (the guy in there is so witty i am no match)
When your book doesn’t have a pronunciation guide:
"A fine sentiment, letting the evil be punished and the good rewarded. You want the world to be like this—very well. But A-Xian must not forget...the world must first be in your hands for what you say to count."
YOU’RE TELLING ME I HAVE TO TRANSLATE A WHOLE SECTION OF THIS SHIT!!! NO RIGHTS FOR WEN RUOHAN’S HERO RHETORIC!!!!
Update on “Maria Theresia”: Episode 02 - Part 03
Technically I am done translating this part BUT there are about four tiny spots at which I’m not. Even as a native speaker, I do not understand every single word sometimes.since the actors - at least the German/Austrian ones - play their character with a sometimes more heavy Austrian accent or rather dialect. I will see what I can do but maybe I need to guess in those situations what might have been said. So just so you know that I might not be as accurate in my translation in the next part as I usually aim to be.
...okay throwing this out to any French speakers here, is anyone familiar with the saying “Les fauves sont nés fauves et les castors castors” ? In context it’s clearly a Standard Saying, like “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” or “a stitch in time saves nine” , but the translation I’m getting for it --something like “cats are cats and beavers are beavers” -- doesn’t really make sense for the context of the larger text , so I’m wondering what it conveys on its own without that reference.
