Transposes by Dylan Edwards
goodreads
Have you read this trans book?
Yes and I liked it
Yes and I didn't like it
No
No but I'd like to
I've never heard of it
Dylan Edwards’ Transposes separates gender from sexuality and illustrates six fascinating true stories of transgender men who also happen to be queer. The result is laugh-out-loud funny, heartbreaking, challenging, inventive, informative, and invites the reader to explore what truly makes a man a man.
Mod opinion: I haven't read this graphic novel yet, but I'm interested in checking it out!
The fact is that #seether sound like #sevenmarythree. Seether sound like #nickleback. Seether sound like #bush. Seether take #nirvana #riffs and #transposes sub-Vedder yowling over them. Also, their new song borrows heavily from a medley of early 90s REM, which is admirably off brand but hardly an improvement. Seether is... not a great band. The rhythm section, however, has wonderful hair. The bassist has the shaved on sides long on top, full beard that dude from Mastodon has perfected and the drummer has lovely thin blond hair that floated up like Sharper Image stardust for the entirety of his drum solo. It was like there was a wind machine built for one emanating from his shoulders. Conversely, people really love Seether. They make people happy. Good for Seether. Good for the people that Seether makes happy. Conversely to the conversely, trans fats and waging endless war also apparently makes people happy. Happiness ain't the end all be all and, if an immortal soul is even a possibility, perhaps we could strive for a satisfaction larger than power chords and Amy Lee in batwings.
If you watch very closely, you’ll see a copy of Transposes in the background of the Law & Order SVU episode titled (I think) “Transgender Bridge.” It’s only on there for a flash and is mostly obscured by Ice-T, so really it’s more like recognizing one of the extras because they’re a friend of yours. :)
But it’s still pretty cool!
Northwest Press is one of my favorite publishers. I’m biased, because I’ve seen them every year at Emerald City Comicon for as long as I can remember, and they were my first source for comics with trans characters.
It was a big deal for me when I went to their booth one year and said I was transitioning (at the time I identified as a trans man), and they offered up several comics for me, including Transposes:
I was too broke to buy anything new this last year, so I’m behind on what they have to offer, but spotted this on the first page:
Knave takes her new powers for a spin on the rough and tumble streets of the Bay area, but what will the bored police force have to say about it? Also, who is this dreadlocked punk-rock beauty who has poor Knave so smitten?
She’s got a magic cat hat!
This last year, I talked with someone at the booth (I think he was the publisher, but I’m so bad at remembering names). I expressed concerns about a comic that appeared in one anthology by a cis gay man who talked about his relationships with trans men in a way that I found pretty fetishistic and demeaning. I wasn’t asking him to pull the book off the shelves or anything, but he was really receptive and talked about the efforts Northwest Press has been putting into getting more trans comics (and he said to send any promising artists/writers his way).
Go forth, those of you with disposable incomes, and purchase many trans and gay comics.
UPDATED: PRICE CHANGE! The book was listed at $7.99, but it actually has a $5.99 cover price. Make sure to let your local shop know!
TODD WANTS YOU… to buy his new comic book. Or rather, to ask your local comic shop to make sure to stock copies! Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts is featured in November PREVIEWS as item NOV141558, and will be on store shelves at the end of December or early next year.
Cowtown Comics Fest is one week from today! I'll be set up here to sell some comics (Transposes and QU33R) and some feeps, so if you're in Denver you should stop in. FREE ADMISSION, don't you know.
I have three original comics pages in this Seattle show, two from Transposes. If you're in the Pacific Northwest, stop in and check it out! The details:
