“Oh your clothes don’t define you”
Society, fucking do better. People should be able to wear what they want and feel comfortable in without feeling like they need an excuse to wear it.
Clothing doesn’t and shouldn’t define your identity unless you specifically it helps you define your identity.
Seonghwa has already so brave sharing with us atiny the clothing he feels he can’t wear for whatever reason has been bothering him. I can only imagine that it must feel nerve wracking to be vulnerable in front of so many people in that way.
The way he expresses himself using fashion is a HUGE part of his identity but it doesn’t define who he is.
It takes a lot of strength to be able to express yourself day to day being a regular person. It must take A SHIT TON MORE strength to do so when you are a celebrity.
As only a fan, I can only wish seonghwa the strength he needs on his journey of self discovery, self love, and acceptance. I am so grateful that he is surrounded by his members who would do anything and everything to support him and lend him courage when he needs it.
As a transmasc individual who enjoys wearing traditionally feminine clothing, there was a period of my life where I tried my best to fit within societal gender confines due to my identity being called into question by strangers and those close to me. It took me awhile to come out of my shell and stand my ground. Today I’m able to express myself and my gender the way I feel comfortable but it’s not something everyone is able to do.
To this day I still hear shit like:
“why are you _______ if you’re transitioning to be a guy”
“you are to feminine to be trans”
“are you sure you aren’t non binary “
“well I don’t see you as a guy when I see you wearing _____”
“but you aren’t the same as other trans guys”
“but you aren’t the same as other (gender conforming cis) guys”
“no one is going to see you as a guy”
“but real men don’t ______”
and when I do wear traditionally masculine clothing it’s shit like
“but you are still wearing makeup”
“but I thought you liked wearing girls clothes”
“this makes you look more normal”
“you look more like a man in this”
“is this how you are going to dress from now on?”
“why do you keep switching it up?”
Celebrate’s “Oh your clothes don’t define you” lyric means so much to me because of this.
The way I express myself using clothing is a HUGE part of my identity, but it doesn’t define who I am.
