Cat Jumping Chapter (I dunno, okay?)
Yamashina is a police officer from the same police department as Mamoru Akasaka. In each given fragment, there’s a 0.000054% probability he’ll be the person chosen to investigate the kidnapping of cabinet minister’s grandson instead of Akasaka, as it was with this story. His presence is enough to surprise even Rika Furude, who’s by this point already dulled over the endless cycle of tragic fate imposed over her.
Since she knows nothing about him, she avoids showing her Frederica Bernkastel persona to him, making it so Yamashina never gets to know about the Mysterious Series of Deaths to happen at the following Watanagashis. Since he’s a nice person, Rika feels happy in just feigning to still have the mentality of a 6 years old girl (even if it isn’t that fake with him). He comes to enjoy her company and quickly befriends her.
The same can’t be said about Ooishi, however. His relationship with the older officer is far less amicable than Akasaka’s, which makes their mission a tad harder. To make things worse, Yamashina is quite rash in jumping to Toshiki’s resuce due to him being a child, threatening both his and Ooishi’s life. They manage to save the boy, but get severely hurt during the mission. He’s scolded over his actions after all is over, making Yamashina reflect about what it means to be a member of the police and whether he’s truly fit for this.
"Switcheroo!"
‘Shalem’ (real name unknown) is a member of the Yamainu, especialized in eliminating people deemed dangerous for Tokyo’s purposes. He was one of the agents responsible for tracking down survivors of the Great Hinamizawa Disaster and silence them, in multiple timelines.
In Matsuribayashi and Miotsukushi, ‘Shalem’ was defeated by the game club during their attempt of retrieving Rika Furude for Miyo Takano’s scheme. He was taken away by the Banken and never set foot in Hinamizawa again. His current status is unkwown.
